The Best Wheelchair Cushions in 2019

A man sitting comfortably in a wheelchair using the best wheelchair cushion.

Sitting in a wheelchair for any length of time can be uncomfortable and anyone who experiences this will surely want to use a cushion. Let’s face it, no one wants to be in a wheelchair but if you are then comfort is very important. Many wheelchairs are supplied with cushions but many wheelchair users will use an extra one.

I personally know a few wheelchair users and they all have one or more cushions for their seat. When one of my friends first started using a wheelchair she was constantly complaining of ‘numb butt syndrome’ and her cushion was a godsend.

There are various types of wheelchair cushions and they’re made from different materials.

Who Needs to Use a Wheelchair Cushion?

People of all ages who use a wheelchair can benefit from using a cushion and there are some good reasons for this. Using a decent cushion provides a pleasant surface for you to sit on. If you’re confined to a wheelchair for long periods of time you’ll want to be as comfortable as possible.

You should also use a wheelchair cushion to prevent you from developing pressure ulcers, blisters and other skin conditions. Pressure ulcers are extremely painful and can take a very long time to heal. Blisters and sweat rashes are also uncomfortable and using a cushion can help minimize these.

You can also use a wheelchair cushion to help you with your posture when sitting for long periods of time. Maintaining good posture is important when you’re immobilized or sitting in a chair for long periods. If your posture is poor you could develop painful hip, back or neck problems.

You may also want to consider using a wheelchair cushion to raise your seating position when the actual wheelchair seat is too low for you. Most of the wheelchair cushions are around 3 to 4 inches thick and they’ll raise your seating position. When your seating position is at a suitable height you should be a lot more comfortable.

If you’re able to get out of your wheelchair to sit in a regular chair or car seat you can also use your wheelchair cushion. The cushions provide a comfortable surface to sit on when driving or sitting at a desk.

What Does a Wheelchair Cushion Do?

A wheelchair cushion provides some padding between your butt and the wheelchair seat. Most wheelchairs are foldable and the seat needs to be flexible so that it folds up between the two sides of the chair. These flexible seats are uncomfortable to sit on and a cushion is going to provide a better level of comfort.

Wheelchair cushions are usually made from foam, gel or a combination of both and some are filled with air. The cushion is simply placed on top of the wheelchair seat and it may or may not have securing straps.

Foam Wheelchair Cushions

Foam wheelchair cushions are very popular and they provide a comfortable seating surface. Foam is firm enough so that it doesn’t compress whilst still being soft to sit on. Other advantages with foam cushions is that they’re lightweight and can easily be cut to size so that they fit your wheelchair.

Gel-Filled Wheelchair Cushions

Gel-filled wheelchair cushions are a good choice for pressure relief. The gel is soft and pliable so that it follows the contours of your butt. Gel-filled cushions are usually more expensive and heavier than foam or inflatable cushions.

Inflatable Wheelchair Cushions

Inflatable wheelchair cushions are also available and are simply filled with air. Air-filled cushions are a good choice if you need to adjust the thickness of your cushion. A downside with inflatable cushions is that the air level needs to be monitored and they can leak.

Wheelchair cushions also protect the seat of your wheelchair from wear and tear, spills and bodily fluids. Protecting the wheelchair seat will prolong its life and it’s also more hygienic. Wheelchairs can be quite expensive and a cushion is one way to help to look after your chair.

Below is a short YouTube video where a therapist shares some information on wheelchair cushions:

How Do I Choose a Wheelchair Cushion?

When you’re choosing your wheelchair cushion one of the most important things to ensure is that the cushion is comfortable. You should use a cushion that’s soft but not so soft that it compresses. If the wheelchair cushion compresses too much you could develop painful pressure ulcers or blisters.

Check the thickness of the wheelchair cushion so that your seating position is correct. Your seating position needs to be at the correct height so that you’re comfortable. Sitting at the correct height will also make it easier for you to get in and out of your wheelchair.

Make sure that you buy a wheelchair cushion which is the correct size so that it fits properly. It’s a good idea to measure the seat on your wheelchair before you buy a cushion. If the cushion is too small it’ll move around and one that’s too large may be uncomfortable to sit on.

Choose a wheelchair cushion made with good-quality materials so it’s hard wearing. The last thing you want is to have to keep replacing your cushion because it’s poorly made. If you buy a foam cushion look for a high-density foam that’s durable.

It’s also useful to buy a wheelchair cushion that has some grip on the underside to stop the cushion moving around. If your cushion is constantly moving you’ll have to keep adjusting it. A lot of the cushions have rubber grips on the bottom which help to keep the cushion in place.

Buy a wheelchair cushion that has a removable cover which can be machine washed or washed by hand. When you spend long periods of time sitting on the cushion you may sweat or spill things. Keeping the cover clean will keep it in good condition and prevent unpleasant odours.

You may find that you have to try a few wheelchair cushions before you find one that is suitable for you. Your height and weight will have some bearing on the type of wheelchair cushion you need to use. The amount of time you spend sitting in a wheelchair is also something to consider when choosing a cushion.

Here’s a short checklist of things to look for when choosing a wheelchair cushion:

  • Buy a wheelchair cushion that’s comfortable.
  • Use a wheelchair cushion that’s the correct size.
  • Buy a cushion that’s well made.
  • Use a cushion that has a grippy underside.
  • Choose a cushion that has a washable cover.
