Historically – when our ancestors lived in caves and hunted wooly mammoths – body hair had a valuable and specific purpose, that is trapping heat next to the skin for extra warmth. Conversely, by lying flat against the skin, hair also allows heat to escape. Hair also helps to keep dust and dirt from entering our bodies, and assists in hearing.
However now that we have heating and warm clothes, we don’t need a lot of our body hair, and while some people might be a fan of the furry teddy bear look, for me personally, it’s a no go!
There are a variety of different reasons why people want to remove their body hair, and an even greater variety of hair removal methods. Waxing is a very popular choice, and home waxing can be easy to do and cost effective.
So let’s discuss waxing a little more, find out what it’s all about, and explore some of the best home waxing kits currently on the market. (source)

What Is Waxing?
For those who aren’t familiar, waxing is a process where warm wax is applied to the skin and then removed quickly, pulling the hair out of the skin, root and all.
The two most popular forms of wax are hard (or cold) wax and soft (also called warm or hot) wax. Hard wax solidifies on the skin, and can be removed without using fabric strips.
Soft wax is applied to the skin, a strip of fabric is placed on top to grip the wax and the fabric and wax are swiftly removed from the skin together, taking the hairs with it.
The two types of wax are equally effective, so it’s really down to personal preference. I really like using hard wax because you don’t need the fabric strips, and call me weird, but there’s just something I find very satisfying about seeing the hairs come out with the wax!
The Benefits of Home Waxing
There are a lot of advantages to home waxing. Let’s start with the most obvious:
Cost Effective
Compared to going to a salon for waxing, home waxing is much less expensive. Waxing is an ongoing treatment – the hairs do grow back, so it needs to be done regularly, every four to six weeks on average.
It’s advisable to buy a good quality machine for heating the wax to the correct temperature; this makes waxing so much easier and the initial cost is very reasonable. After that, the only expense you have is buying new wax, applicator spatulas and fabric strips if you opt for soft wax.
Convenience
A home waxing kit gives you the flexibility of being able to wax whenever you want to. So as soon as you see hair regrowth in a particular area, you can heat up your wax and defuzz – no waiting for the next salon appointment!
Privacy
Having access to a waxing system means you can make sure you are as hair free as you want to be before you put a foot outside your front door.
Having waxing treatments at a salon means you have to wait several weeks for regrowth, which you have to live with for a while before your waxing appointment. Home waxing gives you the freedom and flexibility to do immediate hair removal if you spot a hair that’s out of place.
One disadvantage of home waxing, however, is that depending on the areas you want to wax, it can be a little difficult to reach certain body parts yourself.
How to Use a Home Waxing Kit
For some people, having watched waxing in a beauty salon, using a home waxing kit might be easy; however it is important to make sure you are using them correctly, and to be aware of all of the safety points.
Here’s our guide to using a home waxing kit:
#1 – Place the wax – either in a solid block or in the form of wax beads – into the inner bucket and place in the warmer, set to maximum heat.
#2 – Turn the temperature control setting to the maximum and wait until all the wax has melted.
#3 – When the wax has melted, scoop out a very small amount of wax with an applicator stick. Apply the wax to the area of the body to be waxed to check the wax isn’t too hot.
#4 – Apply the wax with the spatula onto your skin in the same direction as the hair growth.
#5 – If using hard (or cold) wax, wait until the wax has cooled and solidified. Grip the edge of the wax and remove with a quick, smooth movement against the direction of hair growth.
#6 – If you are using soft (or hot) wax, apply a fabric waxing strip and smooth it down on top of the wax, brushing it in the direction of hair growth. Pull the fabric swiftly against the direction of hair growth.
If you have used the wax correctly, you will be able to see the hairs embedded in the wax after you remove it from your skin.
Precautions For Use
Do not use wax over areas of skin with varicose veins present, around areas of infection of inflammation, abscess, sunburn, open wounds or other skin damage.
Do a skin patch test 24 hours before you plan to use the wax for a hair removal session. This should be done routinely whenever you change to a new wax. Watch for any redness which does not fade within a day, or any other kind of skin irritation or pain in the area.
Do not expose the skin to UV rays for 24 hours following waxing. If you have to be outside, use a high factor sunscreen to protect your skin.
Do not swim or shower immediately after waxing. Doing so can irritate the skin.
Make sure the wax is not too hot before each treatment session to avoid burning yourself.
If you have a specific medical condition that affects your skin, check with your doctor before using any kind of hair removal treatment.
