What Is the Best Taurine Supplement?

Capsules with the title "What is the Best Taurine Supplement?"

With amino acids being so important for everyday functions, from building muscle, to improving brain function, it is no wonder that supplements containing amino acids are becoming a regular front runner in the health and nutrition market.

Often supplements will either contain a blend of all 20 amino acids or simply those classed as essential. With more and more research showing the benefits of each individual amino acid, is it really a surprise that new single supplements would be developed?

One such supplement is taurine, known most notably for its effective treatment of congestive heart failure. But what is the best taurine supplement? Read on to find out.

What is Taurine?

As mentioned, taurine is one of 20 amino acids found within the body. In fact, it is the most plentiful amino acid in the whole body and is most abundant in the brain and heart. (source)

Taurine is often referred to as a conditional or non essential amino acid. This means the body is able to produce it on its own and does not need to get it from external sources. This is in contrast to essential amino acids which must be obtained through diet.

That said, one must consider that taurine production decreases with age. In addition, particular vitamins, minerals and enzymes must be available in order to produce taurine at all. For those reasons, there is an argument that taurine should be considered an essential amino acid.

Obtaining adequate amounts of taurine from food sources in order to increase your natural stores to healthy levels is easy to do. Both meat and fish are rich with taurine. It’s also a main ingredient in many popular energy drinks.

What Does Taurine Do?

Although many people consider amino acids the building blocks of protein, taurine is not a substance that will help you increase your muscle mass.

Unlike other amino acids, taurine does not link with others to create those all important chains like L-leucine – the main player in branched chain amino acids (BCAAs).

Taurine Can Improve Athletic Performance

Although taurine may not be the answer to building big muscles, science shows it does have other benefits when it comes to athletic performance. This is probably one of the reasons it is so popular among premier athletes and bodybuilders. (source)

Research has shown when paired with BCAAs, taurine helps to reduce post exercise muscle soreness. (source) Furthermore, recent studies on rats have shown that taurine can reduce muscle fatigue. (source)

This of course would suggest that taurine could be key to promoting physical endurance – something that makes it popular with hardcore gym goers. However, deeper research into this aspect delivers mixed results.

One study on endurance athletes supplemented with different energy drink combinations showed significant improvement in endurance when taurine was included. (source)

Yet another similar study on long distance cyclists supplemented with taurine showed no notable positive effects on their performance. (source)

Breaking Addiction

Although this may seem like a strange benefit for an amino acid, one book, The Addicted Brain: How to Break Free, written by Dr Hyla Cass, claims that taurine is helpful in treating the following:

  • Alcoholism
  • Depression
  • Obsessions
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep problems
  • Bipolar disorder

Healthy Heart

When it comes to taurine in supplement form, it is probably most known for the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF). In fact, patients with CHF using taurine supplements can improve their exercise capacity. (source)

Taurine is imperative to overall good heart health. It improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to heart cells (source) as well as normalizing heart rhythms and improving the effectiveness of heart contractions. (source)

The Best Taurine Supplements

Although taurine can be found in a number of food sources, sometimes supplements are the best way to go if you need a boost.

Choosing the right supplement for your particular needs can be hard work. With so many to choose from all promising an array of benefits, finding one that does what it says on the tin can be difficult, especially with so much misleading information out there.

That is why I have taken a look at the best taurine supplements currently available and chosen 5 top contenders I think will suit everyone.

For me personally, the Bulksupplements taurine powder is the best choice. Not only does the fact it is tested for purity and made in the USA inspire confidence in the quality of this product, but it also offers a huge number of servings at a great price.
