The Best Organic Spirulina Powder & Supplement Brands in 2017

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that has been picking up as a trend in recent years. It’s been dubbed a “superfood” due to its high nutrient levels. I personally wish I had added it to my diet sooner! Reason being it’s packed full of nutrients to benefit your overall health and well being.

In this article I will be outlining the best spirulina powder and supplement options on the market and comparing the quality and price to help you make an informed decision.

Who Can Benefit from Spirulina?

Spirulina is a form of algae that can be processed into a supplement in powder or tablet form. It is nutrient dense, meaning it is packed full of vitamins and minerals and is low in calories. All you need is around 1 tsp-1tbsp, or 1-2 tablets each day.

Spirulina is also great for vegetarians and vegans. Why? It is a plant source of a complete protein (source). Although, even if you aren’t vegetarian or vegan, you can still benefit from using a spirulina supplement in order to boost your daily intake of vitamins and antioxidants.

What Does Spirulina Do?

Spirulina is an algae that grows in fresh or salt water and can be dried out for human consumption. Since spirulina is a complete protein, your body can properly absorb the amino acids and convert them into compounds for numerous bodily functions such as rebuilding muscles and DNA (source).

Spirulina is also a great source of B vitamins B1 and B2, as well as a source of iron. Since it is rich in chlorophyll, it is also great source of vitamins A, C, E, K and is rich in antioxidants (source).

How to Choose the Best Spirulina Powder and Supplement

There is an overwhelming market for spirulina supplements right now. At first, this left me confused as to which one would be the best. When choosing your spirulina, it’s important that it is certified organic.

Since spirulina is an aquatic plant, it’s recommended to avoid spirulina sourced from Japan as its safety is controversial due to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. When you’re shopping for your spirulina supplement, just check the label to find out the source. Supplements from California or Hawaii that are Certified Organic and the best options (source).

Spirulina supplements are available in both powder and pill form, so you can choose a supplement that works best for your lifestyle. If you do not like swallowing pills, consider the powder form. The pills are perfect for busy parents on the go, because you can just toss the bottle in your bag.

The powder form is great if you enjoy drinking smoothies or juices. You can even mix the powder in with some water, however the most common complaint I get from friends and colleagues is that they aren’t a huge fan of the taste of spirulina. I’m not a huge fan of the taste either, so masking it within a smoothie works perfectly for me.

For those who don’t like the taste and don’t like pills, there are supplements that contain spirulina and also have different superfoods mixed in, these products are usually flavoured which could make them easier to take.

This product is USDA certified organic. The price, while still on the higher side, is really good considering you get 1 pound of product. What I like about this one is that if you are not fully satisfied, the company can give you a full refund within 30 days.

  • 1 pound of spirulina, good if you use it on a daily basis
  • Great to mix into smoothies

This product is a mix of spirulina and other greens such as wheat grass, alfalfa, barley grass and chlorella. It also contains goji and acai berries, carrot, beet, raspberry and rose hips for added antioxidants. The reason I am including this one, is that it may benefit those who aren’t a huge fan of the taste of spirulina and who have a hard time taking pills. This powder in particular is tangerine flavoured.

Pros

  • Great if you don’t like the taste of spirulina
  • Great to add in smoothies

Cons

  • Mixed with other supplements
  • Expensive for roughly 8 ounces

  • Some consumers said the pills were easy to swallow
  • Easy to travel with

Cons

This powder will still get the job done, however the price point is a little higher for a smaller amount. This may benefit you if you’re trying spirulina for the first time and you’re not sure if you will like it. That way you can avoid the mess of buying a higher volume of the product for a higher price and not using it.

Pros

  • Easy to mix into smoothies
  • Great size if you’re trying spirulina out for the first time

Cons

  • Small amount of product

Conclusion

Out of the five products, my personal favorite is the HealthWorks spirulina powder. If you’re trying to incorporate spirulina into your daily lifestyle, it is definitely worth it to buy in bulk to help control costs. Many consumers have said that this bag in particular lasts them quite a long time. The price for the amount of product is also really reasonable for a majority of budgets.

I personally find adding spirulina smoothies and juices is the best way for me to take it. The flavour of spirulina alone is pretty strong, but once it is mixed with other things it’s not as potent.
