What is Saw Palmetto?

Saw palmetto is a palm-like plant with berries which has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Initially used to made medicine by the Native Americans, modern men use saw palmetto to treat urinary tract infections and boost sperm production.

What is Saw Palmetto Used For?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Most commonly, saw palmetto extract is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, a common prostate disorder among older men.

BPH is the most common form of enlarged prostate, a condition which can be incredibly problematic for men, leading to urinary tract infections and bladder stones. BPH can be caused by a number of different issues including hormonal changes (when too much estrogen is present) and zinc deficiency.

The American Urological Association tells us that by the age of 60, more than 50 percent of men will have BPH. Therefore, any natural remedy for the condition is greatly welcomed.

One study following patients taking 320 milligrams of saw palmetto daily found significant improvement in BPH symptoms without causing any side effects.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cause of cancer among men after skin cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cancer is the second highest cause of death throughout the world, responsible for around 13% of all deaths globally.

Studies have shown that saw palmetto can actually prevent the growth of prostatic cancer cells. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that saw palmetto supplements are one of the five most commonly used forms of alternative medicine by men with prostate cancer.

Hair Loss

Hair loss is something that can happen in both men and women for a number of reasons. However, as testosterone decreases, many men start losing their locks.

Opinions as to how beneficial saw palmetto is for hair loss are mixed, however, one study that followed over 60 men and women who topically applied saw palmetto extract in lotion and shampoo found that 35% had increased hair density after 3 months.

What to Look For in a Saw Palmetto Supplement

Saw palmetto can be purchased in many different forms, including dried berries, powdered capsules, tablets, liquid tinctures, and liposterolic extracts. Always check the product label which should tell you that all the contents are standardized and contain 85 to 95% fatty acids and sterols.

Oregon's Wild Harvest

Saw Palmetto Oregon's Wild Harvest Caps

  • Quality
    Our rating

This saw palmetto supplement from Oregon’s Wild Harvest is a 100% vegetarian, non GMO, certified organic product made in the USA. It comes in at a middle of the road price offering a three month supply.

Although this is a good quality product that gets excellent reviews, I have listed it last as it contains an extremely high dose of saw palmetto. Admittedly no RDV has been established for this supplement and doses up to 3000 milligrams have been used safely, the general concensus is to aim between 300 and 400 milligrams daily as anything higher can lead to gastrointestinal upset.

With this supplement offering a huge 1170 milligrams per serving, I would say this is too high a dose for your average Joe looking to promote prostate health and hair growth. If you have been advised to take a high dose of saw palmetto by your physician as treatment for BPH for example, this could make an excellent choice.

Pros
Pro 3 month supply
Pro Reasonably price
Pro Capsule form
Pro Certified organic
Pro Non GMO
Pro Vegetarian
Cons
Con Extremely high dosage

For me Gaia Herbs Saw Palmetto Extract is the clear winner. The fact that it’s tested for purity and you can trace the origin of all the ingredients is a serious plus for me. I really think it is so important to know exactly what you are putting into your body so this is a huge bonus. All in all I think this would make an excellent choice for anyone looking to try a saw palmetto supplement.
