What Is Overpronation?
Not all experts agree—there’s a lot of debate in the scientific community about how to define pronation, let alone overpronation.
Pronation is a combined movement that occurs in the foot and ankle complex, involving many different joints and soft tissue structures.
In running, pronation occurs during heel strike as the weight rolls forwards towards the toes and across to the medial side of your feet, as shown in this video:
How Do I Know If I Overpronate?
An accurate diagnosis can only be done by an expert. In attempting self diagnosis, 89 percent of runners misdiagnose their own gait.
One thing that may give you a clue as to whether or not you might be an overpronator is to examine a well-used pair of your running shoes. If they’re excessively worn on the outer heel and the inside edge of the ball of the foot in comparison to the rest of the running shoe sole, then you might well be pronating excessively.
Overpronation is not the only reason for excessive wear in this area, however; there are other biomechanical dysfunctions which can result in the same tread pattern, such as excessive inward rotation at the hip.
