Resveratrol, the ingredient that has been a topic of many studies, could be the crucial component in the so called, “French paradox”.

With the very real health benefits becoming increasingly apparent when it comes to this powerful antioxidant, the choice of supplements on the market is also ever-growing. I’ve decided to take a look to discover what the phenomenon was all about and solve the dilemma of which is the best resveratrol supplement.

What Is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol can be found naturally in sources such as grapes, grape juice, wine, peanuts and certain types of berries. Of the various different foods containing this compound, one of the highest concentrations can be found in the skin of red grapes. The other is derived from a plant found in Asia called Japanese knotweed (polygonum cuspidatum).

This element acts as a powerful antioxidant, and is said to fight free radicals within the body. This polyphenol is claimed to have many potential health benefits.

To reap the benefits of this antioxidant through natural sources, you’d potentially have to drink a copious amounts of red wine a day (I’m talking about bottles not glasses) or eating endless bags of peanuts.

This is just not realistic, and the negative effects of overindulging will by far outweigh the benefits. This is where a supplement could be beneficial.

Benefits of Resveratrol

Promotes a Healthy Heart

Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 cause of death globally. According to the World Health Organization, more than 17 million people die from CVD each year, which accounts for 31% of all global deaths. With statistics like these, it is clear there is a huge demand for anything which could reduce your risk.

Research suggests that resveratrol could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It’s believed to decrease circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL or “bad cholesterol”) levels. This evidence identified resveratrol as an effective anti-atherogenic agent, which could be used in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Anti Aging Properties

Resveratrol has been said to neutralize free radicals in the body believed to be the cause of aging. A study carried out showed that this antioxidant can reduce the effects of aging, but not lifespan. Chances are it may delay the aging process, but life expectancy would not increase.

Possible Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease

Research recently carried out has shown that dietary resveratrol prevents Alzheimer’s markers. The study can be quoted as stating that

resveratrol may be a powerful agent to prevent age-associated neurodegeneration and to improve cognitive deficits in Alzheimer’s disease.

Possible Prevention of Cancer

Because of the antioxidant properties in resveratrol, it has been linked to many different cancers and the benefits of potentially reducing risk, such as with leukemia.

There are also links to resveratrol and possible prevention of breast cancer. Reports confirm that in one study that resveratrol could also aid prevention of liver cancer by suppressing the growth of cancer cells.

Anti Inflammatory Effects and Immune System Support

It has been shown that resveratrol can suppress inflammation within the body which prevents chronic diseases and helps fight infections.

Again, due to the antioxidant properties, this polyphenol helps protect the cells that keep your immune system in working order.

Regulates Sugar Levels

By regulating and lowering glucose levels in the blood, resveratrol could have potential benefits in reducing the risk of diabetes and also reducing of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.

Increases Metabolism, Energy Levels and Weight Loss

study was carried over a period of six months to establish the efficacy of an orlistat-resveratrol combination for weight loss in subjects with obesity. The subjects were placed into four different groups – placebo, orlistat, resveratrol and a combination of the two. The results showed the combination was the most effective in weight loss, proving that resveratrol could increase metabolism.

I would like to point out that most of these studies do show promising results but have been carried out on non-human subjects or in laboratory conditions, therefore, further studies are required to gather conclusive evidence.

What to Look for in a Resveratrol Supplement

Dosage

Initially this should be something you should discuss with your physician. The dosage really should be dependent on your circumstances for requiring the supplement. However, generally speaking, most supplements seem to be around 200 mg to 500 mg.

As research suggests, a low dosage of resveratrol protects and benefits health from a number of different diseases and that high dosages can be detrimental for health.

Content of Resveratrol

There are two types of resveratrol. The one that is most active and therefore most important is termed “trans-resveratrol”. The other, for reference, is “cis-resveratrol”.

Make sure when reading the label it specifies the precise amount of “trans-resveratrol”. Quite often it can be mixed up in a blend of different ingredients and the dose you are getting isn’t quite what you are expecting.

Additional Nutrition

Some supplements offer additional vitamins and minerals, which could be beneficial for well being as well as saving you some hard earned cash. I’m all for taking a combination product instead of having to pop multiple supplements every morning.

Quality of Ingredients

You should also take into consideration the type of ingredients in the supplements. It’s usually good idea to go as natural as possible with the fewest number of ingredients.

Again, read the label closely, if you are vegan or vegetarian you may not want to take a capsule made with gelatin for example.

Potential Side Effects of Resveratrol

Clinical trials have suggested that resveratrol is safe up to multiple dose levels of 5 mg, but due to mild to moderate side effects, the dose should be at a lower level. Certain people should also refrain from using resveratrol entirely. This includes those using blood thinning medication like aspirin and warfarin.

Also anyone due to undergo surgery should refrain from taking this supplement. A certain period of resveratrol free time should be allowed before having an operation due to the blood thinning properties this supplement possesses.

As a precautionary measure, study suggests women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should refrain from taking this supplement too.

The Best Resveratrol Supplement

There are a number of different resveratrol products to choose from and it can often be hard to tell which manufacturer offers the best quality supplement. So I have looked at the options available and chose five of the best resveratrol supplements I think should suit almost everyone.
