If you’re a teenager, getting enough protein is even more important. The rate at which teenagers grow means their young bodies require more fuel to support them.

More and more adolescents are participating in sports activities every year. A recent report showed that each year more than 7 million teens are participating in high school athletics. Many more participated in club sports and recreational activities. Adding intense weight training or sports on top of their existing protein needs means teens protein requirements are much higher than that of a sedentary adult.

How Much Protein do Teens Need?

The recommended daily value (RDV) of protein for teenage boys is 52 grams. Teenage girls require 46 grams of protein daily. However, active teens, especially young athletes, require additional protein to repair muscle tissue after physical activity.

Of course, the best way to increase protein intake is via diet. Meat, fish, vegetables, nuts and seeds are all high in protein. The problem for many active teens is that many food sources of protein are packed with calories. The Institute of Medicine recommends that no more than 35% of your daily calorie intake comes from protein. For this reason many people turn to protein supplements which pack a protein punch without the added calories.

Choosing the Best Protein Powder for Teens

You walk into your local health food store and are bombarded with a sea of supplements. As far as the eye can see, the walls are stacked with tubs designed to aid weight loss, build muscle, boost immunity plus pretty much any other desire you can think of.

There stands a kid who looks about 15 years old. He has a supplement in each hand, hanging on to every word some sleazy salesperson is saying. This guy (who’s probably never worked out a day in his life) is reeling them in with each word as the dollar signs of this week’s commission flash before his eyes.

This poor kid spends hundreds of dollars of saved up allowance on something that’s not necessarily the best choice but probably has the highest price tag.

When purchasing protein powder for teenagers, my motto is “keep it simple”. Look for something that’s fat free, without unnecessary additives.

By law, all supplements need to show the age they are suitable for on the label. Most protein powders are not advised for use by those under the age of 15. This recommendation is not an exact science as one 15 year old may have finished growing where another may still have a foot of growth left.

The best thing to do if you are thinking of adding protein powder into your teen’s life is to check with a doctor, qualified nutritionist or personal trainer whether it’s suitable. Healthcare professionals are not only well educated on supplements but also have a responsibility to put your teenager’s health and safety first. Don’t trust a salesperson who’s just someone looking to make a quick buck.

And The Winner Is…

I really liked the Herbalife product simply because I feel like although a blend of BCAAs and protein may be good for those who are heavily into training, this choice is not too intense. The simple formula is good for anyone looking for a way to add protein into their teens diet.

Plus the fact that it is fat free and can be added to food like soup rather than solely as a shake means it can be added to an evening meal and boost the entire family’s protein intake.
