What Are the Best Protein Bars for Men?

Protein bars with the title "What Are The Best Protein Bars For Men?"

For most guys who love to train hard, finishing off a workout with a protein boost is the only way to go. However, the idea of sweating over a hot stove to get that protein fix is no one’s idea of fun after a brutal training session.

A quick, convenient way to help build and repair your muscles is with a protein bar. But which are the best protein bars for men? Let’s take a look.

Who Can Benefit From a Protein Bar?

Protein is that all essential macronutrient our body needs in bulk simply to function normally, nevermind if you’re hitting the gym hard on a daily basis. Protein is found in every cell of our body. Most importantly from a workout perspective, protein is what repairs and helps build our muscles.

In fact, the National Institute of Health recommends that the average man should consume 0.36 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. This is around 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man. But, if you’re weight training on a regular basis, you should be aiming for 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.

One convenient way to protein load is with the use of protein bars. They’re easy to throw in your gym bag and they don’t require the preparation or clean up of protein smoothies.

What Can Protein Bars Do For You?

Protein bars seem to be the ultimate miracle snack. Not only does the flashy packaging promise to give you gains, they also assure us their flavors are so deliciously mouthwatering you’ll be happy to skip dessert.

A good quality protein bar can give you that all-important protein kick and a great energy boost when used as an on-the-go snack.

If you want to use protein bars to help you get the most out of your workout, they can help you increase lean body mass. One study showed that bodybuilders who used whey and soy protein bars as part of their diet experienced exercise training-induced lean body mass gain.

The problem is, many protein bars are just overpriced candy bars in disguise. They’re packed with artificial sweeteners, loaded with carbs and empty calories, while offering minimal, shoddy sources of protein.

A poor quality protein bar can end up leading to fat gain. Therefore, it’s important to look carefully at what’s on the inside before making a purchase.

How to Choose a Protein Bar

When it comes to any supplement, simplicity is often best. Look for a protein bar with the fewest possible ingredients. The nutrients it does contain should come from whole foods.

Many good quality protein bars use a plant-based protein source. This means the bar is packed with nuts and seeds rather than ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Plus, it’s important to watch out for artificial colors and sweeteners. Most artificial sweeteners have not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the exception of four, one of which being the natural sweetener stevia.

Many of these artificial colors and sweeteners can not only cause adverse effects like hives and even asthma, but are toxic to the body.

So, when choosing a quality protein bar, look for a good source of protein. This means 7 grams or more. Low calorie (150-250) and sugar (no more than 13 grams) content is also ideal. Remember you only get allocated so many per day, don’t use them all on one snack!
