What is the Best Pill Organizer in 2021?

A pile of capsules spilled over a surface waiting for the best pill organizer to be used to organize them.

Pills, the bane of many people’s lives. As you get older, it’s inevitable you’re going to have to take more. Whether it’s your daily multivitamins, aspirin everybody keeps recommending or doctor-prescribed medications for more serious conditions. The best pill organizer could stop your bathroom from looking like the local pharmacy or reduce that rattle in your handbag.

Sound familiar?

The other big problem can be for our elderly relatives, parents, uncles and aunties or grandparents. How can we be sure they’re taking the right daily drugs if we’re not there or if they’re even taking any at all? Recent statistics show the majority (72 percent) of people aged 55 years or older are taking at least one regular drug. Over 20 percent of them are taking four or more drugs.

When looking for the best pill organizer, we want something that simplifies the process and reminds us to take the medicines, vitamins and supplements that are so easy to forget. And if we forget at our age, what hope is there for us as we mature or for those older relatives we love and worry about so much.

Benefits of the Best Pill Organizer

The best pill organizers can make your life and the lives of those around you so much easier. Maybe you’re a mother with young children who needs daily meds for chronic illnesses like diabetes or asthma, a young woman who takes many slimming aids and supplements or just somebody who likes to keep on top of their vitamins. The organizer may not even be for you, an elderly relative will also benefit from something which stops them becoming yet another medication misuse statistic.

The best pill organizer will make sure you never forget your medications again, prevent dosage errors and save time searching through masses of jar and bottles for the right pill. They can be extremely useful for people who are out and about all day or travel a lot as they reduce the number of things you have to carry. And for the elderly, it keeps everything in one place, which you can top up at regular intervals to ensure they get the right doses.

The following Youtube video shows how much easier it can be to top up a pill organizer and offers a few tips and safety precautions:

How to Choose the Best Pill Organizer

When looking for a pill organizer that’s best for you, there are many factors to consider including:

Compartment Size

Many pill organizers tend to have smaller compartments to make them more purse or handbag friendly but you’ll find some larger vitamin and supplement capsules will struggle to fit these. Likewise, if you need to take a lot of pills daily, don’t sacrifice size for portability. There are now many pill organizers that are extra large but use their own wallet for a discreet look and ease of transport.

Weekly or Monthly?

Monthly organizers are better for older relatives or people with chronic illness, as they only need filling once a month. But most of these organizers are bulkier and more suited to a home environment rather than traveling. A system which allows you to take just a few days out of the organizer at a time or a seven day pill organizer is much better suited for people on the go.

Portability and Discretion

If you need to take your pills to the office or school every day, you’ll want a pill organizer that’s both compact and discreet. Many of the best pill organizers now have handy travel pouches and you can even get some which come in an unmarked or quaintly patterned purse. Some brands even allow you to remove just the compartments you need while not at home.

Reminder Alarms

The hardest part of following a medication or supplement plan for most people, not just the elderly or kids, is remembering. Many products have now been developed with alarms for those more forgetful types and some brands may use a smartphone app. There are even subscription based options which use the internet and specialized hardware to monitor medications, depending on how much help you think the patient needs. Even a simple labeling system or color coded containers can be enough to remind us to take those daily pills.

What is the Best Pill Organizer?

With so many different options available it can be hard to know where to start looking. Something to replace a few plastic jars shouldn’t be too difficult to find, surely. Although they may seem like a simple item, choosing the best pill organizer for your needs can dramatically change your routine.

We’ve looked at many of the top selling pill organizers available today, to bring you five which, in our opinion, are the best pill organizers you can buy in 2021.

A high-tech pill organizer and reminder system in one, this organizer holds up to 31 days of medications in individual plastic containers. The color coded containers can be removed and many customers liked the versatility of being able to take out a couple of days if going on a short trip. Each daily pill box has four compartments that hold up to 16 average-sized pills.

A red and green color coding system tracks the days with a loud alarm that can sound up to four times a day for dosing times. A tray at the front of the organizer holds the day’s pill box which you then put back turned the other way to indicate the day has been used. The included talking alarm clock is no more difficult to use than a simple alarm clock you may already have on your bedside table.

Pros
Pro Green and red color coding makes tracking the days simple to follow.
Pro Large compartments will hold enough pills for the average user, even multivitamin capsules.
Pro Simple to use right out of the box.
Pro 31 pill boxes mean you only have to fill once a month.
Pro Easily removable boxes for those days when you are not at home.
Pro Effective home management system.
Cons
Con Filling the boxes once a month can be an arduous task.
Con Not suitable for people who may have dexterity problems with hands—can be tricky to take boxes in and out of rack.
Con Not as well suited to elderly patients who may get confused or forgetful as some other more automated systems.
Con No lock for overdose prevention.
Con Some users thought it overly expensive for what is basically a pill organizer and alarm clock.

If you’re looking for a solidly constructed simple-to-use pill organizer at a reasonable price, this push button organizer by Survive Vitamins is a top seller. The white container has 14 compartments, a morning and evening one for each day of the week with an easy to open push button system and large distinct lettering. A clear lid allows you to see the contents of the organizer, with each compartment capable of holding either seven large capsules or about 20 smaller aspirin-sized pills.

The large buttons and easy open compartments make it ideal for people with arthritis or other dexterity issues to use at home unassisted. It’s even sturdy enough to take on an airplane, although with the buttons not taking too much effort to push you’d be advised to place it in an extra container to avoid travel mishaps.

Pros
Pro Solid construction at budget price.
Pro Simple to use, days split into morning and evening doses.
Pro Large and easy to open compartments, holds enough meds for most people.
Pro Recommended by the Arthritis Foundation.
Pro Large clear lettering for retrieval of the correct day’s medicine.
Cons
Con Buttons and compartment lids are very sensitive—many users report them opening accidentally.
Con Large, about the size of a small laptop so not ideal for shorter trips where luggage may be limited.
Con Lids can fall closed when filling, and some capsules may stick to the plastic.

The first of our ‘smart’ pill organizers we looked at, this fully automated system by LiveFine employs a rotating disc lid to distribute individual doses of medications. The six included templates allow for one to six doses daily and either 28 days for once a day or weekly for four doses daily. This product protects against forgotten dosages while reducing the need for refilling.

A clear or solid white lid is available with a prefilled tray simply moving into the delivery slot and triggering a flashing light and audible alarm. The alarm sounds for 30 minutes until the pills are dispensed by turning the device over. Easy to fill in one setting with the cover lifted to reveal all 28 compartments, the interface is designed to be relatively simple although some less tech savvy individuals may find it less intuitive. An optional safety lock uses a key to secure the lid and avoid overdose for people who may suffer Alzheimer’s, are simply forgetful or have a history of overdoses.

Pros

Pro One of the less expensive automated pill dispensers but with many features of more expensive models.
Cons

For those of us who take a larger number of pills, including humongous fish oil capsules you often get, this extra large container designed for seniors is the perfect fit. An improved design by a caregiver features an oversized rainbow colored pill organizer inside a Velcro binder, with a handy card insert which even features stickers should the writing come off the individual compartments.

The Velcro strap makes it much easier for seniors to open than the clips of many other pill binders yet sturdy enough not to fly open when traveling. The seven compartments are labeled by time of day and slide out for easy filling. Each compartment is large enough to even take nine of those dreaded fish oil capsules. As an added bonus, braille on the white tray holding the individual days makes it easier for people with visual impairments to recognize the correct tray.

Pros
Pro Designed by a company with years of experience caring for seniors.
Pro Large insert card enables recording of personal details should the organizer be misplaced.
Pro Color coded trays with four spaces for different times of day takes the stress out of pill management.
Pro Not just for the elderly, this pill organizer is good for larger supplement pills we all take on a daily basis.
Pro Secure Velcro fastening is easy to open.
Pro Includes free bonus guide; 19 Free Services Available to Seniors, which gives info on low cost benefit counseling, cell phone deals, legal assistance and more.
Pro The company are so sure you’ll like this product they include a no questions asked money back offer if you are unhappy with the organizer.
Cons
Con Although very sturdy, the pill containers can be difficult to open, especially when new, this prevents them from opening if accidentally knocked from a shelf, but may be too difficult for people with dexterity issues.
Con Some users have reported issues with flimsy plastic breaking when pill trays are forced.
Con Very large—not suitable for traveling unless you need a lot of meds as takes up lot of space in suitcase.
Con Leather look binder can be heavy for some users.

For ladies who are looking for something a bit more stylish than dayglo plastic capsules, this attractive little purse-style container from Fashion Smart is ideal. Available in six different colors and designs, this petite pouch is large enough at 4.5 x 3.5 x 1.5 inches to store a week’s medications yet still compact and discreet enough to fit in your purse or clutch bag. Ideal for traveling or just taking to the office without feeling you’ve packed half of your bathroom cabinet.

An inside plastic pill case has eight slots, one for every day of the week plus a useful extra slot handy for a few emergency ibuprofen or the like, and is easily removable for cleaning. A zippered front pouch on the purse is handy for carrying your medical ID, a few emergency coins and other small items. If traveling through customs at a border this space would be perfect for storing the medical advice notes to inform staff exactly what the pills inside are.

Pros
Pro Compact and discreet, doesn’t even look like a pill organizer.
Pro Fits inside your handbag or purse.
Pro Variety of designs and colors to choose from (we’re quite taken with the Hacienda Magenta variant).
Pro Handy top zippered compartment, ideal for cash, credit cards or other small bits and pieces.
Pro Solid inner pill container which is clear so you can see contents, large enough for even the biggest of capsules and easily removable for cleaning.
Pro Value price for pill organizer and fashion accessory (almost!).
Cons
Con Can be too small for those who require a multitude of pills and is best used as a travel bag or for fewer pills on daily basis.
Con Lids open too easy, be careful when unzipping the pouch—may be advisable to use a little adhesive tape if traveling.
Con Letters tend to wear over time too.

Our Choice

Although many of the pill organizers we looked at were designed to be more portable, for somebody who takes a multitude of pills daily (something that happens to us all eventually) a home pill management system may be the answer.

The best home pill organizer and management system will enable you to reduce dosage mistakes, keep all the pills in one place and if you have an elderly relative or somebody who’s forgetful, offer you some peace of mind.

For this reason, in our opinion the best pill organizer is the MedCenter 31-Day Pill Organizer; simple to use but versatile enough to let you take a few days of medications on the road if needed.
