What is the Best Oral Thermometer in 2021?

Woman about to put the best oral thermometer in her mouth.

Having children is challenging at the best of times without having to tend to sickness at night and dealing with a possible high temperature. A simple hand on the head can give you a guidance, but it may just be your hand that’s hot. It can be scary for the child too when presented with unfamiliar devices, I once tried using a meat probe to take my child’s temperature—definitely not recommended, I think the poor kid still has nightmares!

We’ve all been there!

A digital thermometer is a simple, compact medical tool which you can store in your bathroom cabinet ready for such an emergency. It’s not just kids who get fevers, either. Many times I felt slightly sick in the winter months and checked my own temperature before deciding to call the doctor or not. A digital thermometer can often store the last temperature, with many having a memory recall for more, which allows you to see any changes immediately.

If you have children then a good-quality oral thermometer is a must. Gone are the days when we would put something containing toxic mercury into their mouths. Digital thermometers will offer just as accurate but easier to read temperature measurements for not just the kids, but the whole family too.

The Benefits of Using an Oral Thermometer

Although mercury thermometers have always been the gold standard of accurate temperature measurement, many people now use digital thermometers. Using a traditional mercury thermometer requires a patient who is cooperative and carries the risk of breakage and possible contact with toxic mercury. It’s rare nowadays to see an old fashioned mercury thermometer being used in the medical care of infants, children or elderly patients.

For children, rectal temperature has always been the most accurate reading but sometimes not the easiest thing to perform. An oral thermometer is less invasive and more comfortable, you can hardly put a thermometer up your child’s bottom when you’re on a bus or in other public situations. And the child is probably not going to be willing either. (The majority of oral thermometers now come with a flexible tip for a softer and more gentle experience, making it even easier to take a reading very quickly).

Oral thermometers are also very simple to use and have clear LCD displays that make it even easier to read the temperature. Results tend to be displayed in seconds, although some cheaper models may take up to a minute to display the temperature. Audible alerts will tell you when the temperature reading is finished, taking the guesswork out of how long to leave the thermometer in position and many models even have visual or audio fever alerts to warn you of high temperatures.

The final big advantage of oral thermometers is the hygiene factor. Most modern thermometers are fully waterproof and are easily cleaned with running water or rubbing alcohol to remove germs, especially important when the thermometer is to be used on multiple patients. Some brands may use disposable probes or probe covers that can be thrown away after a single use for less chance of cross-contamination.

How to Take an Accurate Reading with an Oral Thermometer

It’s all very well choosing the best oral thermometer your budget can afford, but if you don’t use it correctly the results will be wildly inaccurate. New digital oral thermometers will come with complete detailed instructions which you should study before use. Nearly all digital thermometers will follow the same procedures. Here’s a few tips to get the best from your oral thermometer:

Placement

Ensure correct placement of the thermometer, this is crucial for an accurate result. The probe should be placed under the tongue, with the patient’s lips gently closed around the thermometer. Leave in place until the thermometer signals that it can be removed or for however long the instructions recommend.

Acclimatization

If the thermometer has been stored in an extra cold or very warm place like inside an air-conditioned bathroom or in your purse, always allow the thermometer to acclimatize to the environmental temperature for more accurate results. It’s recommended you leave the thermometer for at least 30 minutes if it’s been in extreme temperatures.

Patient Preparation

Likewise, the patient should try to acclimatize to the surroundings before having a temperature reading taken. Try not to eat or drink anything hot or too cold for the 10 minutes before, and for adults, don’t smoke immediately prior to taking your temperature reading.

Hygiene

Always ensure the thermometer is clean before use. Germs and dirt will not only compromise the health of the patient but also affect the accuracy. Where possible either use a new probe or probe cover for each reading. Store the thermometer in a clean pouch or protective case between readings to avoid damage to the unit or contamination.

The following Youtube infomercial gives an illustrated guide to taking the most accurate temperature measurements with a digital oral thermometer:

iProven is well known for the accuracy of its best selling range of thermometers. This digital medical thermometer can be used both orally and rectally with results displayed in 10 seconds and to a tenth of a degree, it’s both quick and accurate. The flexible tip on this thermometer offers freedom for both oral and rectal readings, as well as taking the temperature of infants and babies. The large display is easy to read and includes three smiley faces that advise of normal to fever temperatures. There’s also an audible beep to let you know when the reading is ready and an alert for fever too.

The unit is waterproof for easy cleaning with either soapy water or rubbing alcohol, although if you intend to use it rectally, I suggest buying two at this price and labeling for oral or rectal use only.

For those of us living a connected lifestyle, this smart digital thermometer from Kinsa can be attached to an iPhone or Android device using a simple provided cable. With no batteries required this device will never die on you, but you do need your phone handy for a reading. The thermometer takes accurate (cleared by the FDA for accuracy) readings either orally, under the arm or rectally (for babies).

The app which you install on your iPhone or Android phone does more than just display and record the temperatures but also offers personalized guidance on how and when to soothe symptoms, a reminder when to take meds and when to call a doctor. The app even includes games using famous characters that aim to make taking temperature fun for cranky kids (although I love Elmo too!). Each family member can have their own personalized profile all carried in your pocket for your doctor or pediatrician to advise on.

Bluetooth compatibility would make a device like this much more advanced but would also require batteries and be much more expensive.

Pros
Pro Lightweight, portable (easy to fit in pocket).
Pro No batteries required.
Pro Comfortable, easy to use—oral or underarm for all ages, and rectal readings for babies.
Pro Keeps a history of all temperature readings, not just the last one which is good for health monitoring.
Pro App comes with medication reminders.
Pro Fun games turn taking child’s temperature into engaging activity.
Pro Can set up individual profiles for each family member.
Pro Medical advice can be informative.
Pro Value price.
Cons
Con Uses headphone socket of phones, newer phones, especially iPhones, without headphone socket and adapters don’t offer full compatibility.
Con Choice of Android phones it can be used with is quite narrow—all Samsung models included but anything else check before buying.
Con Always seek the advice of doctor, guidance from app is purely that, guidance!
