What is the Best Olympic EZ Curl Bar in 2019?

Two kinds of olympic ez curl bars on light grey background.

All weight lifters want bigger biceps and the barbell curl is one of the most commonly performed exercise in gyms. An EZ curl bar can make the curl more effective as it allows the user to target the biceps more. As the name EZ or “easy’ suggests, the EZ curl bar can also take pressure off the wrists and forearms.

Weightlifting equipment can be expensive to purchase or replace, choosing an Olympic EZ curl bar ensures you have the flexibility to progress to heavier weights. We have looked at five of the best Olympic EZ curl bars that are available to help you make the smartest choice for your home gym.

What Is the Difference Between an Olympic EZ Curl Bar and a Straight Bar?

The main difference between an EZ curl bar and a straight bar is obviously the shape. Straight bars are made of a straight cylindrical rod with barbells attached to each end of the rod. The best EZ curls bar are also made from a cylindrical rod with weights attached at either end, but the rod is not straight, having several angled parts used for gripping the bar.

EZ curl bars are also normally shorter than straight bars which means you use different methods of gripping than with a straight bar. Using a straight bar your palms are facing upwards in a position known as full supination. When using an EZ curl bar your palms are in a semi-supine position, halfway between facing completely up and palms facing each other in a neutral position.

The differences in the shape, size and grip involved using an EZ curl bar can mean slight differences in the groups of muscles being trained. The wider grip of a straight bar means the biceps are more intensely worked. The slightly narrower grip of EZ curl bars activates the brachioradialis muscles more, a muscle group on the lateral side of the forearm, and works the biceps a little less.

Exercises like the reverse-grip EZ-bar preacher curl can be better for building forearm muscles than specialized grip exercises as they work both upper and lower arms in one movement. (source)

Which Is Better: EZ Curl Bar or Straight Bars?

Many bodybuilders prefer to use straight bars for the impressive results they can achieve over a shorter period of time. EZ curl bars can be safer to use with the wrists and elbows being in a more neutral position when lifting the slightly angled bar. The risk of the common injuries that athletes can develop over time using straight bar,s including medial epicondylitis (a pain at the inner part of your elbow), is reduced when using EZ curl bars. (source)

Put simply, exercises using a straight bar may hit your biceps slightly more but increase the risk of injury, while an EZ curl bar may work your biceps slightly less but decrease your risk of injury. EZ curl bars are therefore recommended for newcomers to weight training and especially for use in home gyms.

An EZ curl bar may not achieve the quickest results but knowing how to do a proper bicep curl can help get the same results at a more relaxed pace. A useful instructional video can be found below:

What to Look For When Choosing an Olympic EZ Curl Bar?

Olympic EZ curl bars are usually longer and heavier than a standard curl bar. Although Olympic barbells have specific size and weights standards, Olympic EZ curl bars don’t have any weight or size specifications they have to adhere to. Olympic EZ curl bars are not used in any official sports capacity, so standardization is not necessary. Many manufacturers make Olympic EZ curls bars in different lengths and weights.

Another reason to choose an Olympic EZ curl bar over a standard bar is for the rotating sleeves or “spin”. Directional pull can place significant pressure on the wrists and back when doing lifts or squats. As you move a standard bar, the weight plates want to spin but can’t. Try an Olympic EZ curl bar in the gym and you will straight away notice the difference in feel and technique.

Size Range of Olympic EZ Curl Bars

Olympic EZ curl bars use a two-inch sleeve so must be used with Olympic weights instead of regular-sized weights which use a one-inch sleeve. The sleeve size can determine how much weight you can lift. Typically, one-inch sleeves on EZ curl bars cannot handle weights of more than 160-200 pounds. If you want to load up more weight, then an Olympic EZ curl bar could be the answer.

Most Olympic EZ curl bars are 47 inches long but some can be up to 60 inches long. The weight of the bar can range between 15 and 25 pounds compared to standard curl bars which are often much lighter at 11-13 pounds.

The Quality of Knurling Can Be Important

Knurling is the textured part of the bar which adds to the grip. With standard bars the knurling can be quite pronounced compared to Olympic EZ curl bars where the knurling can be much finer. This can enable you to lift heavier weights without the bar tearing your hands or the back of the neck.

The different grip styles that you can use on an Olympic EZ curl bar also negate the need for a more pronounced grip. It’s always best to get a bar with knurling that runs the entire length of the bar which enables you to practice more grip variations. This can also allow you to isolate different groups of muscles with different exercises.

Not All Angles Are the Same

The three best angled olympic ez curl bar next to each other on white background.

The main reason for choosing an EZ curl bar is to avoid the unwanted tension that a straight bar puts on the wrists and elbows. This tension can be put to much better use on the muscles. The amount of bend (or the angles) of an EZ curl bar can change the effectiveness.

Overall Finish

One of the things many people overlook when purchasing an Olympic EZ curl bar is the quality of finish. If you want to know how well it will hold up over time you need to look at the finish. Most EZ curls bars come with a chrome coating, but many offer the option of a black EZ curl bar.

A common complaint with many products is that the coating can often rub off too easily, even after just a few workouts. This may leave marks on your body or home surfaces and at very worst may lead to the metal corroding over time.

This Olympic EZ curl bar also comes in a choice of chrome or black finish but the black option uses a manganese phosphate coating. As well as looking very smart, manganese phosphate is one of the hardest coatings available and is proven to be abrasion and corrosion-resistant.

At 22 pounds, this bar is slightly heavier than some others, but has a respectable maximum plate loading of 400 pounds. A snap-lock ring system and quality brass brushes in the sleeves make it very easy to slip plates on and off.

This Olympic EZ curl bar comes in a choice of a black or chrome finish. It may be worth steering clear of the black finish as many users have complained of rusting issues after a short period of using the bar. In addition, there have been reports of the black model especially having excessive oil or grease around the sleeves. With most EZ curl bars it is recommended to choose the chrome, and this is no exception.

The bar is a solid product with a capacity of up to 400 pounds; it is a fairly decent size which will suit most users. Users have often commented on how good the grip offered by this bar is. The dual grips have been biomechanically designed to reduce wrist and forearm pain when performing bicep and forearm targeted exercises.

Pros
Pro Quality knurling and grip.
Pro Not too heavy at 15 pounds.
Pro Chrome finished model seems very sturdy and durable.
Pro 400-pound weight capacity.
Cons
Con Many users have found the black finish to be an inferior product.

This Olympic EZ curl bar from Titan is a heavy duty bar which should have no problem holding 2-inch Olympic plates up to 200 pounds. A chrome coating looks and feels great and the sleeves are firmly attached to the bar.

The diamond cut knurling goes really deep into the steel, allowing for a firm grip. The angles on the Titan are a bit sharper than some EZ curl bars which makes it more comfortable to use for many users.

The sleeves rotate very smoothly but the finish can be quite slippy. It may be necessary to get some covers for the springs to remedy this problem.

Pros
Pro High quality construction and finish.
Pro Quality rotating sleeves.
Pro Diamond knurling gives a very firm grip.
Pro Very durable.
Pro Good value for money.
Cons
Con No spring collars are included.
Con Only 200 pounds maximum weight capacity may be limiting for some people.
