If this applies to you, then using a melatonin supplement could solve your problems and correct your sleep cycle.

But what is melatonin? What does it do and what’s the best melatonin for sleep? Read on and I will explain all.

Who Should Use Melatonin Supplements?

Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain. It sends signals to tell your body when it’s night time, preparing your body for sleep.

During daylight hours, melatonin production stops. However, once it gets dark, melatonin production should naturally begin.

Melatonin makes us drowsy and sends us slowly into the land of nod.

The problem is, these days many people unknowingly deprive their bodies of this essential hormone. By staying up late, being in brightly lit environments at night as well as working night shift, we prevent our bodies’ melatonin production.

This can either cause the release to happen later, meaning by the time you try to sleep you do not have enough melatonin in your body to do so. Or it can send conflicting signals to the brain halting melatonin altogether. Neither of these are desirable results.

In these cases, using a melatonin supplement short term can help alleviate the problem.

What Does Melatonin Do?

Getting enough melatonin at the correct times is very important.

Melatonin signals to the brain that it’s time to rest. However, its role goes far beyond that - it’s an essential hormone.

Melatonin helps your vital organs - most notably your heart - to rest while you sleep. Moreover, melatonin acts as an antioxidant, helping your body to rid itself of toxins at night.

How Will Melatonin Help Me Sleep?

Taking a melatonin supplement is a good way to reset your sleep cycle if you are having issues.

Nevertheless, research has shown that actually we only need around 150 micrograms of melatonin. You need to be aware of the dosage any supplement offers.

If you want to use melatonin to reset your sleep cycle - for example making you sleep one hour earlier - it’s best to use a slow release form of supplement.

I’ve used melatonin in the past and it has been very helpful. If I travel across timezones, I use it to alleviate jet lag. If you’ve never experienced jet lag (lucky you) you seem fine for a while but then suddenly hit a brick wall of tiredness at the most random time. Neither love nor money can keep you awake when it strikes.

The worst part is that you then suddenly wake up (usually at about 3am) fresh as a daisy ready to start the day. In this case I’ve used melatonin just to help reset my system and it worked great. But of course, I only use it for one or two days on the rare occasion I travel long distance.

However, if you have a long term sleep problem, melatonin supplements should only be used for a maximum of two weeks. Although melatonin is natural, incorrect dosing and use at the wrong times can be incredibly dangerous.

Melatonin is not the same as a sleeping pill. If you use it while in daylight or bright lighting it will not make you sleep, but rather confuse the brain which can cause depression.

How To Choose The Best Melatonin for Sleep

As melatonin should only be used in small doses, you need to look for supplements offering the lowest dosage.

Melatonin comes in a number of forms: capsules, gummies, powders and liquids. These choices are mainly down to personal preference, although in the case of slow release capsules, they have a special coating in order to provide a gradual supply. This means you can not split them to get a lower dose.

With gummies, powders and liquids, you’ve the option to limit how much you ingest if you feel the dosage is too high.

I’ve looked at most of the options available and picked five melatonin products to review for you. As all are offering the same thing, I’ve tried to select a number of different forms and doses. I’ve also selected my overall favorite which I’ll share with you at the end.



Our rating

This is a liquid melatonin supplement which offers the lowest dose of all the supplements I have reviewed. A full dropper offers just 1.5mg of melatonin. You can only use half if you want an even lower dose or use more if you want higher.

It’s reasonably priced and a good choice for anyone who does not like pills. It comes in berry flavour and comes in a 59ml bottle.

The one downfall is they also include vitamin B6 and I personally would rather just have plain melatonin. However, the B6 is well within the daily recommended amount.

Our rating

This is one of the most popular melatonin supplements on the market. However, for me personally there are a couple of issues that knock them off the top spot.

They’re a time-release tablet which means not only are they meant to make you fall asleep but keep you asleep for longer.

However, they are quite a high dose of melatonin at 5mg and their time release-coating means you can not cut them to take a smaller dose.

The other thing I was not fond of and in total honesty would probably make me avoid them is the fact that they also include an incredibly high dose of vitamin B6. Actually 500% of the daily recommended value. Vitamin B6 tends to give you energy so including so much in a sleep aid supplement is confusing to me.

With that said, lots of people have used them successfully and swear by them. If you have tried melatonin before and know a higher dose works better for you, these could be a good option, however, I don’t think I would recommend them to a first time user.

To be honest, I’m kind of on the fence about this product. What I really like about it is that first of all they are really convenient. They come in little sachets that you can either pour directly onto your tongue or mix with a little water.

These are a great option for someone like me who uses melatonin on the go to assist with jet lag. It’s easy to just pop one in your purse while travelling rather than carrying around lots of pills.

The only thing I really don’t like is the price. They only offer 10 powder sticks and come in at around $1 per stick. I personally feel that is rather expensive for what they are. Also, they do not state the exact amount of melatonin they include, just that it is within the recommended daily dosage.

But if you could find them on a multi-buy or at a discount and are only looking to use them for travelling they might be a really good option to try.

This is a melatonin supplement in gummie form which I know a lot of people prefer.

These come with 140 gummies per bottle. One serving is classed as 2 gummies which has a total of 3mg of melatonin.

What I like about these is if you wanted to start with a lower dose you can simply just take one gummie. There’s no need to mess around trying to cut up tablets.

The one thing that a number of people who used them said is that they can melt in hot weather. Keep them in a cool, dark cupboard to avoid this.

Our rating

This is a melatonin supplement that comes in the form of a dissolvable tablet. You just put it on your tongue and it disappears.

It comes in strawberry flavor and lots of people commented how nice they taste. They’re also really well priced.

One downfall is they are not gluten free. Also a lot of people say that they simply didn’t work for them, but that will always vary from person to person.

They offer a dose of 3mg per tablet and can be broken easily to ingest a smaller amount. For anyone who is happy to take this form of tablet these may be a good inexpensive option to try.

Which Is The Best Melatonin For Sleep?

For me personally, I prefer liquid melatonin supplements to tablets. That’s just down to personal preference. My choice is BioGenesis Liposomal Melatonin Drops.
