The Best Masticating Juicers on the Market

When I first started juicing, I didn’t really give enough thought to my juicing equipment – and I wish I had done more research.

I selected my juicer from a relatively small range to suit my budget without considering the quality of the juicer or the impact of my choice on the quality of my juices.

The juicer I happened to select was a centrifugal juicer. I’d read about the health benefits of juicing produce like kale and wheatgrass, but when I tried it in my juicer, it just flung the shredded bits around a bit without producing any liquid.

Older, wiser, and armed with a bit more research and experience, I now own a masticating juicer. Thank goodness.

Let me tell you why and take a look at the best masticating juicers on the market.

Not All Juicers Are Equal

There are a number of different juicers available today, and thankfully there’s a wider selection to choose from than I had when I started juicing.

The basic and least expensive type of juicer is the one I initially bought – a centrifugal juicer. They chop up produce with a blade, then spin it at high speed to release the juice.

The high speed produces heat and friction, which destroy some of the nutrients and cause faster oxidation. As a result, your juice doesn’t taste as good as it could, it contains less nutrition and can’t be stored for very long. Don’t get me started on how much money I wasted on trying to juice spinach with very little to show for my efforts.

Moving to the other end of the market, many people believe twin gear, or triturating juicers to be the gold standard of juicers. They crush and grind produce between two corkscrew shaped revolving plates and press the juice through a strainer.

Twin gear juicers are great for juicing anything, well, with the exception of citrus fruits. They produce superior quality juices, but come with a steep price tag; they can set you back in excess of $1000.

The middle ground between these two types of juicer is the masticating juicer. For most people who juice regularly at home, they are good all-round machines that produce excellent quality juices.

Let’s take a closer look at why…

What Is a Masticating Juicer?

Also known as a gear juicer, these juicers work on a similar principle to twin gear juicers.

They have a single corkscrew shaped plate, called an auger, that slowly squeezes the produce against the outer wall of the juicer. This has the effect of tearing and chewing up. The pulp is then collected and pressed through a strainer – usually a stainless steel mesh.

Advantages of Masticating Juicers

Masticating juicers offer several advantages over other types of juicers. Let’s explore the benefits:

Slow Speed

The slow speeds of these juicers mean that a minimal amount of heat and friction is produced. This means that your juice will be packed full of nutrients, subject to less oxidation and can be stored for longer without spoiling.

Less Foam

Production of foam when juicing means that the ingredients have been whipped about and exposed to more air. Air in juice causes faster oxidation, which lowers the nutritional value of your juice.

Masticating juicers generally produce less foam than other types of juicers, preserving the nutrients, giving maximum health benefits and allowing your juice to be stored for longer.

Maximum Juice Output

The mechanism used by masticating juicers to extract the juice results in more juice being produced compared to some other types of juicers.

This means that not only does your juice have a higher nutritional value; you also save money by using less produce to make your required amount of juice.

The economical operation of masticating juicers offsets the extra dollars you spend on buying the juicer.

Great with Greens

Leafy vegetables like kale, lettuce and spinach, herbs and ingredients like wheatgrass are notoriously challenging for juicers.

Masticating juicers are generally excellent at extracting maximum juice and nutrients from these kinds of ingredients.

Citrus Fruits Are a Cinch

One downside of many twin gear juicers is they struggle to juice citrus fruits effectively – to the extent that many owners of twin gear juicers also buy a separate citrus juicer.

Not so for the mighty masticating juicers – they manage citrus fruits with style, producing, as an example, a decent size glass of orange juice from only two oranges.

If you’re planning to use lots of citrus fruit in your juices, this is a pretty important point to consider.

Versatility

Due to the slow speeds at which masticating juicers work, they have the effect of homogenizing foods, and can therefore be used to make a variety of different foods in addition to juices. These include nut butters, sorbets, baby food, ice cream, pates, salsa and other sauces. Some masticating juicers can also be used to make pasta and grind coffee!

Disadvantages of Masticating Juicers

We have to say, there aren’t very many downsides to a good quality masticating juicer, but here are a couple of points to consider:

Higher Cost

Masticating juicers are generally more expensive than many other types of juicers, and can set you back a few hundred dollars if you decide to go for a top of the range machine.

However, given that masticating juicers produce more juice per ingredient than other juicers, there is a long term saving which can balance the initial higher cost of the machine. In addition, many masticating juicers come with a long warranty. Some of the more expensive models have warranties lasting ten or fifteen years.

Narrow Feed Chute

Masticating juicers generally have a smaller feed chute than, for example, most centrifugal juicers. This means that a little more preparation time is needed, as fruits and vegetables need to be chopped into smaller pieces. Most people consider the nutritional advantages of masticating juicers to be worth that little bit of extra effort.

How to Use a Masticating Juicer

Operating a masticating juicer is relatively straightforward.

Firstly, wash your hands with soap and water, and make sure your juicer is set up according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

To maximize the nutritional value of your juice, you should aim to prepare your ingredients, juice them and consume the juice in as short a time frame as possible.

Wash your ingredients thoroughly, and peel any ingredients with bitter skin, such as oranges.

Chop the ingredients lengthways to best fit into your juicer chute.

Push your ingredient gradually into the feed chute. Some people like to juice leafy ingredients and softer produce first, and finish with the firmer produce to push all the nutrients from the softer ingredients through the juicer.

Some ingredients may need a little help to feed through the juicer, and most juicers come with a tool to move the ingredients through the chute.

Once you’ve made your juice, separate the removable parts of your juicer and rinse under warm running water, so your juicer is ready to use for your next juice. You might need to use a soft brush to remove some of the pulp debris, and you can use a mild detergent if necessary.

If you need to store your juice, immediately transfer it into an airtight, preferably dark container, and make sure the juice completely fills the container to minimize oxidation.
