Can you benefit from a maca root supplement? What’s the best maca supplement for you? I’ll discuss this (and more) below.

Who Needs Maca Root Powder & Supplements?

First of all, there’s no such thing as a “maca root deficiency”, as is the case with vitamins and minerals. However, maca does contain many vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients which may be beneficial to you.

Maca has long been used as a natural remedy for many ailments.

One of the most common uses for maca root is to treat infertility in both men and women. So, if you (or your partner) are having trouble conceiving—whether you have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), low sperm count or another condition—maca root may be the answer you’ve been looking for (source).

Maca root supplements have also been used to help treat fatigue, hormone imbalance, depression and acne, among many other issues. So, if you suffer from any of these conditions, and are looking for a natural remedy, it’s probably worth considering a maca root supplement.

Keep reading to find out how exactly maca root supplements work.

What Does Maca Root Do?

As mentioned above, maca root has many benefits. This is due to its unique composition of over 30 different minerals and over 60 phytonutrients.

Hormone Balance

Maca root contains compounds called glucosinolates, which support hormone balance and may prevent cancer (source). Maca root also nourishes the hypothalamus, which is known as the control center of homeostasis (i.e. physiological balance). By doing so, maca root indirectly acts on the pituitary, adrenal and thyroid glands, regulating one’s hormones (source).

For example, maca root controls estrogen levels in females with PCOS, decreasing their symptoms. Maca has also been found to increase testosterone in men, leading to an increase in healthy sperm. It’s important to note that while maca increases testosterone in men, it will not do so in women. It balances the hormones in each sex, providing the desired results for each. Hormone imbalance is one of the key contributing factors to infertility, so this explains how maca root may work to improve fertility.

Since maca root balances hormones, supplements can also be used to reduce symptoms of menopause, mood disorders, hyperthyroidism and acne.

Increases Energy

Maca may also help to increase energy by stabilizing blood sugar levels and maintaining adrenal health (source). However, more research needs to be done to determine the exact mechanisms by which it works.

Antioxidant Properties

In addition to all of these wonderful properties, maca root boosts the antioxidants, glutathione and superoxide dismutase. I’m sure you’ve heard about the hype surrounding antioxidants; they’re good for so many things! One of the main benefits of antioxidants, though, is preventing chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes (source).

How To Choose The Best Maca Supplement

When choosing a supplement of any sort, you must check the label carefully. The label will contain important information about potential allergens, the source and quality of the ingredients and dosage.

In regards to maca root supplements, you may want to check what type of maca root the product contains. There are three types of maca roots: black root, red root and yellow (or cream) root. Each type provides different benefits.

The black maca root is especially good for improving men’s libido, building muscle and enhancing mental focus. If you’re a woman, you may want a supplement sourced from the red maca root, as this type balances hormones and improves fertility and bone health. The most common type of maca is the yellow type, which is great for boosting energy (source).

In addition to checking the type of maca, you’ll want to pay attention to the form—extracted or capsule. The extracted form is typically more effective. However, the gelatinized (cooked) versions are typically easier on the stomach and have a higher concentration of nutrients than raw versions.

Finally, you’ll need to decide which dosage is right for you. Most people find that 500 mg per day is good enough, but taking up to 2,000 mg per day is not uncommon, either (source).

Maca root supplements generally do not have any negative side effects since it does not contain caffeine or any potent compounds. However, if you have a condition which may be worsened by an increase in estrogen, such as breast cancer, it is recommended that you avoid maca root supplements (source). If in doubt, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.

Our Picks For Maca Root Powder & Supplements:

I have chosen to review five maca root supplements, to help you make an informed decision.

Our rating

Nature’s Way offers yellow maca in an encapsulated powder form. There are 100 capsules (525 mg each) in the bottle and it is recommended that you take three capsules daily.

The quality of this supplement is good. The company is Tru-ID certified, meaning that the ingredients listed on the labels actually match what is in the products and they adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This definitely gives users peace of mind. I also like that it is free of artificial flavors and colors, in addition to being vegetarian friendly.

There are not many downsides to this supplement. One minor complaint is that it may smell bad to some users. Also, some users complain that this supplement caused them to have stomach aches, while others say it did nothing (neither positive nor negative) for them. However, the majority of users claim it does increase their energy. On top of that, the price is really good.

Now Foods offers maca powder in an encapsulated form. The bottle of 100 capsules (500 mg each) contains 50-100 servings for a very low cost.

NOW Foods is a company I can trust, as it is highly certified. It is non-GMO, Kosher approved and in full compliance with the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practices (source). So, you can be rest assured that the products are safe.

If you look closely at the ingredients, you’ll notice this supplement contains no starch. This means that it has been gelatinized, so it should be easier to digest than raw maca. However, a few users do report stomach ache as a side effect of taking this supplement.

Everyone is different in terms of what they can handle, though. Now Foods does not state whether or not the maca was processed at a high temperature. This is worth investigating as high temperatures can get rid of the beneficial enzymes found in maca.

As for the efficacy, some users say they noticed no difference after taking this supplement, but the majority says it boosts libido and improved their energy levels.

The Maca Team offers a one-pound package of organic, raw maca powder derived from Peru. Their version, however, is specifically from the red maca root, which is beneficial for bone health and balancing hormones. The Maca Team’s version (which contains 50 servings) is also cheaper than some competitors. However, it is still rather costly as far as supplements go.

Again, the quality seems to be reflected in the price. This supplement is certified USDA organic and GMO-free, in addition to being vegetarian-friendly.

Users say this supplement helps with osteoporosis and helps balance hormones. In addition, many report that it has a good taste.

Since this is raw maca, it may be hard on the stomach (and a few users have complained about this). However, The Maca Team also offers the gelatinized version. All of their maca supplements are processed at low temperatures to ensure that beneficial compounds are not lost.

For those who may find raw herbs or supplements hard to digest, this product is a great find. It is gelatinized (using low heat) to ensure absorption and ease of digestion, while also maintaining the beneficial enzymes.

It was tough choosing the best product, because the top four are all very close overall. However, I think Viva Naturals Organic Maca Root is the best choice.

I like that this product is gelatinized for ease of digestion, while maintaining all its beneficial elements.

There are really no major downsides to this product. It is very high quality, being non-GMO, organic and harvested in Peru (where maca was originally grown). For this quality, the price is great.
