The Low Carb Diet

Low carb diets have been around for a long time. They are a popular weight loss tool for thousands of people. The guidelines differ slightly depending which diet you’re following. In general, they permit less than 20 percent of calories from carbs per day. This means restricting sugary foods as well as bread and pasta. You can replace them with foods high in protein, good fats and fresh vegetables.

Diet plans like the Atkins diet have been touted as the gold standard of weight loss programs. Although many may believe this is simply a fad, plenty of research is surfacing that shows scientifically, low-carb diets are one of the best ways to lose weight.

One study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared weight loss between two groups of people. One was on a low-fat diet and one on a low-carb diet. They were observed for 12 months. The low-carb group lost 7.3% of body weight, compared with only 4.5% for those on the low-fat plan.

Numerous studies have also been conducted to determine whether low-carb diets can lower blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. One study proved that “a low-carbohydrate diet is more effective in reducing body weight than healthy eating in both diabetic and non-diabetic subjects.” (source)

When following a low carb diet, around 30% of your daily calories will come from protein. Protein rich foods can be calorific and don’t usually offer the high levels a protein supplement would. For many, using a protein powder is an excellent way to get a high dose of protein without all the calories.

For example, two scrambled eggs at breakfast offers around 12 grams of protein. One scoop of powder can easily give you double that amount. If you’re trying to achieve over 60 grams of protein daily on a calorie restrictive diet, supplementing with protein powder can be a great way to meet your nutritional needs.

How to Choose the Best Low Carb Protein Powder

Obviously choosing a product that is low in carbohydrates goes without saying. There are a couple of other things to consider when looking at a protein powder for a low carb diet.

First of all, opt for an unsweetened protein powder with less than 2 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Protein isn’t naturally flavored with that creamy chocolate or vanilla we’ve become accustomed to. Adding flavorings to protein powder raises the carbohydrate content.

Completely unflavored protein powders are available. Often these are intended to be added to both savory and sweet dishes like soups and stews rather than just the traditional shake form. The downside is that they can be chalky both in taste and consistency. Many find them hard to stomach.

Manufacturers often pack their low carb protein powders with artificial sweeteners for a zero calorie, sweet post workout treat. This may seem like the ideal scenario. However, according to a report from the Harvard Medical School, consuming artificial sweeteners can leave you craving more sweets.

If you simply can’t handle your protein without a little bit of sweetness, find a product which is sweetened with a natural sweetener like stevia. Stevia is approved as a sweetener by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
