What Is an Ice Pack for Neck?

An ice pack for neck pain is a gel-like substance encased in plastic, which is then chilled and used to relieve symptoms of neck pain. Neck pain can be caused by a number of different conditions including sports injuries, poor posture, repetitive motions, whiplash, or simply holding your head in an unusual position or sleeping in the wrong position.

Pain in the neck area can be acute, which means it’s caused by a sudden injury and immediate pain is felt, usually accompanied by inflammation and swelling. It can also be chronic, where it comes on slowly having built up over time, due to overuse of the muscles or incorrect posture.

How Does an Ice Pack for Neck Work?

An ice pack for neck pain relieves symptoms through cryotherapy, or cold therapy. This method works by lowering your skin temperature, reducing nerve activity, and reducing pain and swelling. Cold therapy is believed to be especially effective for managing pain accompanied by swelling, which often happens in the area around a tendon or joint.

Cold therapy also tightens your blood vessels, which helps lactic acid to drain out of fatigued muscles. After using an ice pack for the recommended time period of 20 minutes, you allow your muscle tissue to warm back up again which causes oxygenated blood to return to your muscles and aid in their recovery.

Who Needs an Ice Pack for Neck Pain?

An ice pack for neck pain can be used by anyone of any age if they’re suffering from neck pain symptoms. These products are non toxic and safe to be used by children and the elderly, although young children need to be supervised while preparing and using the pack to prevent burns from either using it for too long, or overheating it if used as a hot pack.

What Is the Best Way to Use an Ice Pack for Neck Pain?

To use an ice pack for neck pain, the product should initially be placed flat in the freezer to chill for around two hours. It shouldn’t be chilled below zero degrees fahrenheit.

When the ice pack is sufficiently cold, remove it from the freezer and place it in the protective sleeve if one is provided. If not, make sure you put a tea towel or layer of clothing between the ice pack and the skin of the affected area, or you’ll risk ice burns to your skin.

Apply the product to the affected area for up to 20 minutes at a time, and then store it in the freezer after you use it. Many ice packs for neck pain can also be heated and used as hot packs, and for an acute injury this is beneficial after the initial 48-hour period following the injury, when a cold pack should be used.

The following YouTube video explains the difference between cold therapy and heat therapy, and at which times you should be using each method for your condition:

To use this product as a hot pack, you can heat it by either putting it in a microwave for around 30 seconds, or placing it in already boiled water for seven to 10 minutes. Check the temperature of the hot pack against your wrist before applying it to the affected area for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time.

What Are the Features and Benefits of an Ice Pack?

An ice pack for neck pain has a number of features and benefits. Most of these products remain flexible after chilling or heating, allowing them to mold to different areas of the body and ensure maximum contact with the affected area.

Many ice packs for neck pain can also be heated and used as hot packs. Heat is beneficial for chronic pain conditions and acute injuries after the first 48 hours have passed, when the inflammation and swelling have decreased.

Some ice packs for neck pain come with a soft fabric cover sleeve, which protects the skin and helps to prevent painful ice burns. This also eliminates the need for a towel or extra clothing, and the cover sleeves often have Velcro straps which secure the pack in an optimal position on the affected area.

Our Choice

After assessing our five different ice pack for neck pain products on their benefits, effectiveness and value for money, it was a little hard to separate them. However in our opinion, the best ice pack for neck pain was the Torex Mojility Professional Hot and Cold Therapy Flat Pack.

This product is shaped specifically for the neck and shoulder area, unlike the rectangular ColePak product and The Coldest Water’s model. It also wasn’t prone to splitting or leaking like the Chatanooga and Arctic Flex ice packs.

The Torex Mojility Professional Hot and Cold Therapy Flat Pack can be used as a heat pack as well, however the main benefits to the Torex Mojility product is that it gets very cold and retains this temperature for a long time out of the fridge or freezer. It also remains very pliable while cold, even after repeated usage.

The combination of the quality, shape and flexibility of this product, along with its suitability for neck issues whilst also being effective on other body parts, makes the Torex Mojility Professional Hot and Cold Therapy Flat Pack the best ice pack for neck pain currently available.
