What Is a Bench Press?

A bench press is a versatile piece of gym equipment designed to help you get the most out of any strength training. You can perform compound exercises such as the mentioned bench press as well as many other seated or lying down moves.

Why Bench Press?

In my opinion, alongside the dead lift, squats and overheads, the bench press is one of the go-to primary exercises for any strength training routine.

The bench press is great for the upper body – in fact the American Council on Exercise rate it as one of their top three most effective chest exercises for muscle strength and toning. (source)

A bench press focuses on compound exercise, which means you are using multiple joints and muscles at the same time. When using a bench press you are engaging primary muscles like:

  • Pectorals – chest
  • Triceps – arms
  • Deltoids – shoulders
  • Biceps – arms

However, with the correct form you also use muscles in your back (laterals), legs (quads) and hip flexors.

Mastering the right technique for a traditional bench press is essential; I’ve seen many make blunders and this only leads to injury. If you want to know how to perform a bench press the right way, check out this tutorial:

Once you’ve homed into proper handling, the bench press is a great measure for strength and power. You will build muscle and reduce body fat and it also strengthens your bones. (source)

On a lighter note, for all the guys out there – the bench press also carries some decent man pride bragging rights. One of the biggest bouts in gym banter I hear is “what do you bench?”

What to Look for in a Bench Press

If you are considering adding a bench press to your home gym setup, here are a few pointers I’ve picked up along the way:

Price

Budget will always play a role. As with anything, you will come across low cost options along with the higher priced models. Try to spend as much as you can comfortably afford but be sure it’s going to suit your needs. After all, why waste money on bells and whistles if you won’t use them?

Primary Usage

Ask yourself what is your main aim for the bench press? For some, a flat bench press is ample to serve as an upper body workout with free-weights. However, others prefer a variety of positions to mix it up – sitting upright, or even lying on the decline are all possible. Which positions are you most likely to use?

Benches come in a variety of styles – some are adjustable others are fixed. The best thing is to decide upon your primary usage and take it from there.

Maximum Weight

How much do you bench? Be sure to check the maximum weight capacity of the bench press. There is no point buying something that isn’t going to cater to the weight you lift.

Space

How much room do you have in your home gym? If space is tight, there are folding options to cover this.

Additional Features

Some bench presses come with added extras that enable you to work other areas of the body. This opens other avenues in terms of weight and strength training.

The Best Home Bench Press

Filtering through the options available can sometimes feel like an arduous task. Trying to determine quality in line with your specific needs takes time and patience.

Therefore to give you an idea of what’s around I’ve found five home bench press options which I think should cover the various levels of lifting.

Rep Fitness features a simplistic yet strong bench press for home gym.

As it’s a flat design, there aren’t any incline or decline positions with this bench press. It strikes me as a straightforward piece of gym equipment that should still provide an adequate base to lift from.

In fact, Rep Fitness tested their bench up to a whopping 1000 lbs total weight capacity which speaks for itself in terms of strength. These numbers should give you confidence in the fact the bench will support whatever you lift.

The sturdy character carries throughout the construction. The bench is built with heavy-duty use in mind, using 11-gauge thick steel hardware, and it also comes with a 10-year frame warranty.

The seat is a nice touch, its 2.5-inch thick pad is comfortable yet firm enough to give a good balance of both support and cushion. Also the cover is made of textured non-slip vinyl that should limit movement as you bench.

The one gripe that frequently gets noted is in regards to level adjustments. For some, trying to get it square with the floor to get the right balance was a challenge, some users continuously had to tweak it before use.

Pros
Pro 1000lbs total weight capacity
Pro 11-gauge heavy duty frame
Pro 2.5-inch thick seat pad
Pro 10-year frame warranty
Pro Product weight 45lbs
Pro Dimensions 47L x 12W x 17.5H inches
Cons
Con Achieving adequate levelling was an issue for some

The Bowflex Selectech 5.1 bench is an adjustable option that provides the foundations for a muscle building free-weight workout from home.

This home bench press is designed to reinforce good posture and provides a stable platform to lift up to a maximum load of 180 lbs.

The Seletech 5.1 offers six levels of adjustment, starting from 90-degree incline, 60-degree incline, 45-degree incline, 30-degree incline, flat and finishing down at a -17-degree decline. This allows for a wide scope of variation in workouts.

There is also the addition of a leg brace to provide extra support and balance when in the decline position. It is detachable so you can easily remove it when not in use so it doesn’t interfere with other workouts.

The steel construction is heavy duty which means it should hold up against the abuse of pumping iron. To back up the durability aspect, Bowflex offer a 30-year warranty on the frame.

Overall the general impressions are promising for this bench. It’s very solid, has a good weight capacity and meets the need to be able to perform various bench press moves in the correct form.

One drawback that some users noted was the gap between the back pad and the seat. They felt it was too wide and uncomfortable when in certain positions on the bench.

Pros
Pro 180 lbs maximum lifting load
Pro Adjusts to 6 bench positions
Pro Removable leg brace
Pro Product weight 62lbs
Pro Dimensions 56L x 26W x 20H Inches

Fitness Reality provides a space saving home bench press in the form of their 1000 super max weight bench.

This is an adjustable bench providing a range of 12 angles, from a 20-degree decline all the way up to an 80-degree incline.

It’s all down to the durable powder-coated tubular steel construction and its triangular support structure that gives the bench strength to uphold a generous total weight capacity of 800lbs.

The frame stabilizers reduce chances of movement and the detachable leg hold bar also gives you additional support while you work out.

This bench press can be folded and comes complete with wheels which makes moving around or stowing away much easier when you aren’t using it.

This appears to be a well built and sturdy bench with no wobble or any other undesirable movement that might occur while lifting.

Unfortunately those looking for a totally horizontal position were disappointed. Many couldn’t get the “flat” setting completely true, instead it was more of a slight decline.

Pros
Pro 800lbs real weight capacity
Pro Steel frame construction
Pro Foldable for storage
Pro Transportation wheels
Pro 12-position adjustable backrest
Pro Adjustable leg hold bar
Pro 35lbs product weight
Cons
Con “Flat” setting not accurate for some

Body Champ offers this olympic weight bench – a home bench press designed with serious lifting in mind.

One feature that stands out is the adjustable backrest. It can switch into seven different positions – flat, military, multiple incline and decline which means your pecs should get a thorough workout.

The bench rack is designed to suit both Olympic and standard bars and it also carries a maximum lift load of 300lbs. For me, this kind of setup could prove suitable for those committed to strength training.

Body Champ have also acknowledged the safety aspect by including a “U”-shaped front leg stabilizer for reinforced support and the racks have built-in safety hooks as well as a “no pinch” feature.

This bench also has various additional extras for a total body workout. It features a crunch handle for core work, a leg developer for lower body exercises and a preacher curl for pumping your biceps.

For many this bench gets the job done resulting in solid workouts and has a good number of options for the money. However, it does feel quite compact because of the curling bench and this led to a few problems for taller users.

Pros
Pro Adjustable backrest - 7 positions
Pro 300lb maximum lift load
Pro Preacher curl pad
Pro Crunch handle
Pro Built-in safety hooks
Pro Compatible with olympic and standard bars
Pro Heavy-duty 2.5 inch frame
Pro “U”- shaped stabilizer for added safety
Pro Product weight 78.5lbs

The heavy duty steel frame has a durable powder-coat finish and is engineered to meet your lifting needs up to a total maximum weight of 600lbs.

The seat is made with high-density 2-inch thick upholstery for comfort. It also supports the body helping to reduce fatigue whilst you pump iron.

And to round it off, this bench also has the addition of a dual action-leg developer complete with foam rollers for working on the major lower body muscles to help build stronger legs.

The general opinion is that this is a decent beginner bench for a home gym considering the price tag.

However, unfortunately for some this bench became a clothesline too fast. Many noted when benching heavy weights during workouts it just didn’t feel rigid enough.

Pros
Pro 600lbs total weight capacity
Pro Steel frame construction
Pro 5-position adjustable back pad
Pro Dual function leg developer
Pro High-density foam padding
Pro Olympic weight plate post
Pro Foam rollers
Pro Dimensions 67L x 45W x 50H inches
