Best Hair Removal for Men

Compact blade and foam brush on wooden table.

In the past, hair removal for men simply meant a visit to the barber or shaving at home. However, with the rise of the metrosexual male, guys now have as many options for hair removal as women.

Gone are the days of macho medallion men in the local club with hairy chests popping out from their half buttoned shirts. Nowadays, many men are embracing the hairless trend and you don’t have to be a performer, sportsman or a Russian leader to do it. (Yes, we are talking about you, Mr Putin!)

The good news is that a large number of these can be performed in the comfort of your own home too. So where do you start? You’re in the right place – in this article I’ll explain the basics of the different hair removal methods for men and at the end I’ll share my top picks for products that get the job done.

Why Not Just Shave?

For many years a man’s main weapon against unwanted hair was a standard razor.

A normal razor can be used to shave not just the face, but the chest, neck, legs and arms too. You could even use it to trim the nether regions, but you would need a very steady hand! Larger back shavers are available too they have wider blades and long handles like a loofah to reach less accessible expansive areas.

Shaving may be easy and convenient, requiring just a razor and some foam, but it’s definitely not the best option for protecting your skin nowadays.

The average man shaves around 16,000 times in their lifetime, each time removing not just hair but top layers of skin – leaving the face unprotected. About 40% of men have skin problems caused by shaving including cuts, irritation and pimples to name but a few. (source)

There are many foams, moisturizing formulas and aftershave balms that aim to protect sensitive skin and improve the condition of the skin. Many men are switching to longer lasting techniques like waxing, sugaring or depilatory creams which also help improve the appearance and health of the skin. Waxing and sugaring can even be used on areas like the neck, beard and mustache without issues.

Depilatory Creams for Hair Removal for Men

Man trying his best at the mirror to correctly apply hair removal cream for men.

Probably the easiest and least painful way to remove body hair at home is to use a quality depilatory cream – more commonly known as a hair removal cream.

Hair removal creams work by chemically breaking down the keratin protein that hair is made from and removing the follicle from the skin so it can be wiped away.

Each cream has an active ingredient responsible for its actions; the most common of these is potassium thioglycolate. Despite the low hazard level rating given to potassium thioglycolate by the Environmental Working Group (source), caution should be used as these alkaline chemicals can hurt if not used as directed. If you leave the cream on your skin for too short a period, the results may not be as effective as you wished for. Leaving the cream on for too long can cause mild or severe discomfort and chemical burns.

Because men’s hair tends to be thicker and coarser than women’s hair, for best results you should look for a cream specifically designed for men.

The Pros of Depilatory Creams

  • Easy, fuss free way of getting rid of unwanted hairs. Simply apply the cream in the shower and rinse off after a few minutes. The cream literally dissolves the hairs.
  • Regrowth is finer and softer unlike trimming or shaving which leaves the hair follicles blunt and square at the ends, making it appear thicker when it grows back. Hair removal cream leaves hairs with tapered ends that seem softer.
  • The effects last longer than shaving. The skin will remain stubble free for up to days as the cream can dissolve the hairs just underneath the surface of the skin.
  • As there is no mechanical element involved, there is no scraping or tugging of hairs and the creams can be much gentler on the skin than other methods.
  • Depilatory creams are relatively inexpensive when compared to some other hair removal techniques.

The Cons of Depilatory Creams

  • These creams tend to contain harsh chemicals that have the potential to cause severe skin irritation. It’s recommended to perform a small patch test before using a new product. If you notice any redness, burning or itching you should rinse off straight away. You may need to test several products before you find one that is suitable for your skin.
  • Directions for use must be strictly adhered to. If you leave the cream for too long, you can do damage to the skin, and it can be very painful!
  • Creams may not work too well on particularly thick hairs.
  • Check the product label before using on areas below the belt, that’s the last place you want a chemical burn!
  • Treatment may not last as long as epilatory methods like waxing, sugaring or epilation devices which remove the entire hair.

Waxing or Sugaring as a Hair Removal Technique for Men

We have all seen those TV comedies where a poor witless character winces in pain as a strip of wax is ripped from their body. We’re not going to lie here, waxing, and to a certain extent sugaring, is usually painful! However, these techniques do offer a more permanent hair removal solution often lasting up to four to six weeks before you need to endure it again.

Gone are the days of gloopy, sticky honey-based waxes that caused so much pain as they ripped the skin away too. These have been replaced with soy waxes, creamy lotions that when applied to the skin only stick to the hair and are removed by pulling on strips of cloth after the mixture has dried. Waxing and sugaring achieve longer lasting results by pulling the hair out at the root.

Although many salons now offer waxing treatments for men, it feels too intimate or embarrassing for some guys, and is prohibitively expensive for some too. There are many waxing or sugaring kits out there for use in the privacy of a man’s own home. Men’s skin is slightly different to women’s, with more active sebaceous glands causing oilier skin and more collagen making the skin thicker. Wax designed for a woman’s skin shouldn’t be used on a male’s skin but nowadays many hard and soft waxes are formulated especially for men.

Sugaring involves a paste mainly made from water, sugar and lemon and is often used on more sensitive areas of skin like the face. Some experts even recommend use of sugaring to prevent the beard hairs growing back in different directions. It’s also ideal for smaller areas difficult to treat with wax including the armpits or back of the neck. However, sugar paste may not be as effective on thicker hairs where waxing is recommended.

Correct aftercare for waxing includes using an antibacterial wash to avoid getting bacteria into any open pores. You should always ensure to rinse off any lingering wax after treatment. Sugaring leaves less sticky residue on the skin to remove. Loose fitting clothes for a few days after a wax can help with the skin’s sensitivity.

The Pros of Sugaring or Waxing

  • Removal of hair at the root results in an average of four weeks of smooth skin, dependent on hair type and thickness.
  • Hairs removed at the root are more likely to regrow with fine rather than blunt ends and are less likely to cause irritation or itching.
  • Waxing can be carried out on all parts of the body with sugaring recommended for more sensitive parts. You can even use them on genital hair, but it will hurt and you would be wise to try other body parts first as an indicator of the pain you may feel.
  • Waxes can include hydrating and regenerating properties that help to condition the skin after treatment.

The Cons of Sugaring or Waxing

  • You must allow some regrowth before repeating the treatment. Wax needs at least a quarter inch of hair to be able to adhere to it and rip it out.
  • We keep stressing the pain involved, but you may get used to it with time, and modern waxes are far less painful than the sticky thick waxes of yesteryear. The pain is usually fleeting and many customers describe it as a mild discomfort.
  • Waxing can leave the skin feeling very sensitive after treatment. It is recommended to avoid the gym, swimming pool, hot tubs, saunas and tanning salons for 24 hours after a waxing session.
  • Some soreness or redness is usual with wax or sugar treatments. You should avoid applying deodorants, body sprays or other lotions to any affected area.

Our Top 5 Picks for the Best Hair Removal Methods for Men

There are many treatments that can be performed by a professional salon like laser treatment or electrolysis but here we have looked for products that can be used at home by yourself or with the help of a partner. Many of these are substantially less expensive but can offer results similar to the salon with some practice.

Although we haven’t really talked about electrical epilators, many men swear by these small gadgets for the frequent removal of body hair. The Emjoi Emagine for men is the first epilator designed especially for men and features 72 tweezers, by far more than any of the unisex epilators on the market.

The extra tweezers on this epilator mean most hairs are removed on the first pass avoiding the need to run over an area again causing more irritation. Being an epilator, this machine grabs the hair from the root which means hair grows back more slowly. It’s not completely pain free – it can hurt at first but with the correct after conditioner, your skin will feel smooth and hair free.

Pros
Pro Easy to use
Pro Mess free. No bottles or tubs of potion and creams to accidentally knock over in the bathroom.
Pro Very quick - extra tweezers mean you normally only have to run it over each area once.

Cons
Con May take practice getting quick with the epilator. Contours of machine don’t match the contours of a man’s body to closely.

Con but doesn’t need monthly topping up like many wax kits or depilatory creams. One off purchase.

Active ingredients include potassium thioglycolate and calcium hydroxide for an effective “melting” effect on hair follicles.

This cream from Nair can be used on several parts of the male body including back, chest, arms and legs. Veet is probably the name most people think of when looking for a hair removal cream. Many women’s bathrooms have a trusted tube of Veet in their medicine cabinet. This product for men is actually a gel which is incredibly potent as it contains both potassium thioglycolate and calcium hydroxide.

This gel should be used on less sensitive areas of the skin like the chest, back or legs and definitely not left on for more than the stated six minute maximum. Men who have tried this formula on genitals have experienced less than desirable results – always do a patch test first!

The gel like consistency should not just be rinsed away – using a flannel or face cloth is advised to ensure all residue of the gel is removed to prevent any skin reactions or chemical burns. Many customers also commented on the overpowering odor that this gel/cream has. The immense power of this formula should be utilized with care.

Pros
Pro One of the best hair removal creams for very thick or coarse body hair.
Pro Gel is easier to apply to difficult to reach areas than many similar creams.
Pro Big name brand
Pro considered by many to be the best.
Cons
Con Some men complain they feel more pain and burning than with other creams.
Con Not for use on genitalia
Con Very strong chemical odor.

Our Pick for the Best Hair Removal Method for Men

Any one of the five products we have looked at will do the trick when it comes to hair removal for men – it’s purely a matter of personal preference. Hair removal creams may be inexpensive but you have to consider the effect of harsh chemicals on the skin over time. Waxing may last longer but I don’t care what anybody says – it’s downright painful.

If you want the smooth body of an Olympic swimmer or to look like an extra from Magic Mike, but you are a wimp like me when it comes to pain, an epilator may be the answer. The Emjoi AP-18MS Emagine Epilator for Men is currently the only epilator designed for men and offers an easy way to get rid of that ugly unwanted body hair.
