What Are The Best Gymnastic Rings in 2019?

Woman in a gym facing the wall while training on the best gymnastic rings.

To be perfectly honest, in the ignorance of my younger days and blithe assumption that I knew everything (we’ve all been there, right?), I used to dismiss gymnastics rings and not even consider including them in my own workout.

Since then, with a bit more knowledge about my own health and fitness regime and even moreso through becoming a personal trainer, I have developed a very healthy respect for gymnastic rings, and with very good reason:

Have you seen the guns on those Olympic gymnasts?!

Gymnastic rings are an amazing bit of gym kit that give you an upper body workout like nothing else on the planet.

Have I got your attention now? I thought so!

Let me tell you more about what gymnastic rings can do for you and share my best gymnastic rings review for 2019.

What Are Gymnastic Rings?

In simple terms, gymnastic rings are two wooden or plastic rings which are secured to a stable surface above them by two straps which buckled to the rings.

Sounds simple enough so far.

The simplicity of gymnastic rings is what makes them such a challenging piece of equipment. They have nothing to stabilize them…nothing, that is, except for your muscles.

Who Needs Gymnastic Rings?

In my opinion, gymnastic rings are fantastic equipment for anyone who wants to build stronger or bigger arms, chest and shoulder muscles. But more than this, because your muscles have to stabilize the rings for you to use them, they also help to improve functional control and proprioception.

The absolute beauty of gymnastic rings, however, is that they really are for absolutely anyone – from children to adults, and from absolute beginners to professional athletes.

This may not be apparent from a first look at a pair of gymnastic rings. I think one major reason why I dismissed them when I started training is because all I knew about gymnastic rings is from watching the Olympics, and seeing those hugely muscled athletes swinging themselves around effortlessly.

I mean, how do you relate to that? I thought at the time I’d have to build up my arm strength to be able to use gymnastic rings, but I’m going to let you into a secret…

It’s the other way around! Just check out this beginner workout:

Far from having to have enough strength to support your body weight by pushing down on the rings, the rings are actually what help get you there.

Here’s how:

How to Get Started Using Gymnastic Rings

When you begin using gymnastic rings, you can first start by simply hanging from the rings. This helps to strengthen your grip and prepare you for using the rings as you progress.

Some people find they can’t support all of their body weight for very long at first; if you find it too challenging you can support some of your body weight by placing the rings at a height where you can just reach the floor.

Either way, with regular practice, people soon see an improvement. Then it’s time to move on to practicing shoulder retractions to get those shoulder muscles working to control the movement, and doing ring rows – again, with your feet on the floor, to work up to being able to do a rowing action while horizontal.

Again, with practice, you’ll be able to do a full pull up before you know it!

What to Look For

Gymnastic rings are usually made from either wood, plastic or metal. Everyone has their preferences – some people feel comfortable using plastic rings, others like the weight of metal rings, and some like the solid feel of wood.

One advantage of wood is that many people find that when their hands sweat during a workout, grip isn’t affected so much as on the plastic rings.

Small variations between different rings can make a big difference to your workout. For example, some rings have a smaller grip diameter which makes them much easier to grip if you have smaller hands.

Other than that, the decision of which type of rings to use is down to personal choice.

The straps need to be good quality and durable, and have no give or elasticity in them. Most gymnastic rings come with non-stretch close-weave webbing straps.

If you’re planning on progressing to pull-ups and lots of work about the ring, it’s better to go with slightly thinner width straps as they don’t cut into your arms during your workout.

The buckle system obviously needs to be strong and sturdy to hold the straps securely. A lot of gymnastic ring sets come with a cam style buckle, which are secure, but it can take a little fiddling around to get the rings level.

This is no problem at all if you intend to keep your rings set up at one height, but can be a pain in the proverbial if you change heights a lot or don’t have the space to keep you rings set up permanently.

Carabineer-style attachments are now becoming available, and make adjustments a lot easier to manage. Some straps also come with markings to make it nice and easy to set up the rings and get them nice and level.

Safety

With any gym equipment, but especially with kit that will eventually support your body weight, it is essential to make sure it is safe.

Wherever you decide to set up your gymnastic rings, make sure that the fixings are well able to cope with more than your body weight, as you might choose to add extra weight to make your ring work more challenging as you progress.

It’s vital to follow the instructions to secure the straps and buckles to the rings – there is a right way and a wrong way, and the wrong way could result in serious injury and damage to the belt buckles.

If the instructions that come with your rings aren’t clear, contact the manufacturer for advice.

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of checking the straps and buckles each and every time you use your rings just to be on the safe side.
