The Best Green Tea For Weight Loss

By now most of us are aware that drinking green tea is good for you.

You probably already know someone who drinks green tea religiously yet you’ve never tried it yourself.

Research has shown that drinking green tea has a vast amount of health benefits due to its high antioxidant content. Studies have shown that one of those benefits is weight loss.

If you’re considering trying this healthy beverage to kick start your current diet, you likely want to know the best green tea for weight loss is.

I’ve looked into it and picked five products which I personally think are a great option for anyone who wishes to try green tea for slimming. I’ve chosen a selection of brands and listed their benefits as well as some pros and cons for each.

I’ll also let you in on my overall favorite at the end of the article. So read on to find out how going green might help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Who Should Drink Green Tea?

The easy answer to this question is anyone and everyone.

Green tea is packed with nutrients that have lots of beneficial effects on the body.

Research has shown that green tea can give you energy, reduce bloating, increase immunity and of course help to melt away the pounds.

Even if you are not specifically looking to drink green tea for weight loss purposes, most people will benefit from the nutritional content. Plus, many people drink green tea solely because they like the flavor. After all, tea is the second most popular drink, preceded only by water.

Green Tea and Weight Loss

Green tea contains a number of different things which studies show aid weight loss in different ways.

First of all green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant which aids fat burning while enhancing your workout performance. Although there is not as much as found in green tea as in coffee there’s still enough to produce positive effects.

Also as previously mentioned, green tea is loaded with antioxidants. The most important of these in terms of weight loss is epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG which can boost your metabolism. Numerous studies show that this causes a higher fat burning percentage both at rest and while exercising.

One study in 2008 even concluded that men given green tea extract burned 17% more fat while exercising than those who received a placebo.

Although a vast number of people have reported how green tea (both as a drink and an extract supplement) aided weight loss for them personally, research presents modest results in terms of actual pounds lost.

Therefore, it’s important to remember that although green tea may aid weight loss, it’s not a miraculous pound shedding wonder cure. Like any kind of slimming supplement, it’s important to combine it with a healthy, balanced diet and exercise program.

How to Choose?

If you decide to give green tea a go, there are a few things to consider in order to find the best product for you.

Firstly, have you tried green tea before? Green tea can be quite bitter - the flavor is not to everybody’s liking. Unlike black tea, you won’t be filling it with milk and sugar to hide the taste (especially not if you’re planning on using it to aid weight loss).

As most well known brands offer green tea, it may be worth trying a cheaper household name that you trust to ensure you like green tea before splashing out on an expensive product.

Also you need to think about your preferences. Usually loose leaf tea is more potent, but are you comfortable using loose tea? I personally use loose leaf black tea and it’s fine, but does take some getting used to.

If you’re not going to be comfortable with loose leaf tea, you will need to find a brand that offers a traditional bag.

Lastly, if you are looking to try green tea to aid weight loss, I would advise you to check out brands that specifically state they can be used for this purpose. There are a number of brands that advertise their products as a “slimming tea” or “detox tea”.

After looking at an abundance of varieties, I’ve narrowed it down to five products which I feel could be the best green tea for weight loss. I have ranked them and listed some pros and cons for each as well choosing an overall favorite.

If you are an avid green tea drinker and have any advice about the products I’ve chosen or even have a favorite I haven’t listed, please let me know in the comments below.

I’m not going to lie, when it comes to tea this one is pretty impressive. First of all it is a loose leaf, 100% natural, unblended organic tea. There are no extracts for flavor and no fillers.

Moreover, it’s from the Darjeeling tea region which basically makes it the champagne of teas!

It is dispatched to retailers within 48 hours of being picked meaning it is incredibly fresh. It is rich with antioxidants, aids digestion and supports weight loss.

Best of all it’s reasonably priced. It does have a very strong, natural green tea flavor. Ideal if you’re already used to the flavor of green tea and want a high quality organic product.

Pros

  • 100% natural
  • Organic
  • Darjeeling tea
  • Reasonable price

Cons

  • Strong natural flavor not for all

Out of all of the bagged green tea varieties I looked at, this probably has the best reviews and credentials.

It claims to be “Dr. recommended” throughout the US as a slimming aid, as well as aiding memory. My first thought of course was that these were pretty bold claims! I mean come on, no one likes a show off! However, an abundance of positive feedback from people who use this product lead me to believe that it could be as good as it claims.

Lots of people have said it has given them lots of energy throughout the day while suppressing their appetite and helping them to lose weight. One repeated downfall though is the flavor; but, that is always down to personal preference.

Pros

  • Dr. recommended
  • Easy to use bag
  • Aids weight loss

Cons

  • Strong flavor
  • Takes a long time to steep

This green tea from Yogi is another which aids weight loss. Initially what I liked about this tea is the fact that it has blueberry and hibiscus extracts for flavor. So if like me you are not the biggest fan of the green tea flavor, this fruity blend could be the right choice.

Many people who’ve used this product noticed benefits in terms of weight loss but rather than cleansing you out like a lot of varieties, this tends to suppress your appetite.

The one bad thing about this product is that one of its vital ingredients (kombucha organism) is killed by adding hot water to it. Therefore, it is unlikely you will receive any of the stated health benefits from this ingredient.

Pros

  • Supports a dieting program
  • Some people found it suppressed their appetite
  • Easy to use bag
  • Fruity flavor

Cons

  • Kombucha organism killed by heat

OK so this is the first green tea on our list which is specifically designed to aid slimming. In fact, the packaging states that it will “increase metabolic activity and cleanse the system.”

One of the ways it does this is by adding senna leaves into the green tea blend. It’s worth noting as anyone who has adverse effects with the use of senna products might want to avoid this one. However, many people who used the product noticed results and claim it works even if the flavor is a little gross!

On the bright side, compared with most of the green tea products available, this one is very good value. If you are looking to try a slimming green tea for the first time without breaking the bank, this could be an excellent option for you.

Pros

  • 100% natural
  • Can be used hot or cold
  • Good price
  • Weight loss tea

Cons

  • Includes senna (laxative)

It is good to see a traditional tea going green! Lipton has been around as long as people have been drinking tea which is probably why it’s “America’s Favorite Tea”.

Although this brand in no way openly suggests their blend will aid slimming, the reason I have listed it as one of the top five is because everyone knows and trusts Lipton.

If you’ve never tried green tea before and are a bit dubious about using a loose leaf version, you can try a good old trusty Lipton tea bag without spending a fortune.

Enjoy it and you can always move onto a slimming tea later but if you hate it, you can keep it in your tea cupboard for guests. Win, win!

Pros

  • Trusted household brand
  • Easy to use tea bag
  • Reasonable price

Cons

  • Not stated to aid slimming
  • Blend can be quite bitter

The Best of The Best

So what’s the best green tea for weight loss? For me personally the Vahdam tea is the brand I would use.

Simply because when using anything to aid weight loss I want as few filler ingredients as possible. This tea is 100% natural without any caffeine or flavorings it would definitely suit me best. Also I am used to loose leaf tea and always find it more potent and longer lasting than bags.

However, these are all personal preferences and a different tea may suit you better. If you have tried any of the teas I have mentioned please feel free to comment below with your experience and opinions.
