What is the Best Green Superfood Powder in 2017?
When you hear the words “green superfoods” what springs into your mind?
Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but it sounds like something from a super hero comic to me. Like a bunch of vegetables that will give you some sort of super powers to rid the world of all evil.
But jokes aside, superfoods have been around for many years and I think it’s safe to say they have good reason to stay. The myriad of benefits to health are totally up there. But now the trend is to go green.
With green superfood supplements filling the health stores, which one should you, go for? What is the best green superfood powder?
Are they all what they are cracked up to be? Or is this just another trendy gimmick?
With this in mind I thought I would do some digging and get to the route of the answer to see just how super these greens really are.
What are Green Superfoods?
The definition of a superfood is:
“A food considered exceptionally good for one’s health and for boosting the immune system owing to its naturally high content of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants or omega-3 fatty acids”
We’ve all heard about the powerful antioxidant properties of blueberries or the health benefits of salmon with the omega 3s it contains.
Green superfoods are also very high in, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and to no surprise they are all a very rich green colour.
Here are a few which you may or may not be familiar with:
Spinach doesn’t really need an introduction as it’s a familiar leafy green vegetable that’s heavily associated with a childhood cartoon favorite of mine, Popeye.
When you take a look at the plethora of nutrients and goodness that spinach contains, it’s another clear candidate for the super green award.
Nutrients at a glance:
Spinach is a diverse nutritional compound that promotes health beyond basic nutrition. This leafy green contains various plant chemicals (phytochemicals) which help fight against many diseases, like cancer and obesity. (source)
It’s particularly beneficial in the battle against lowering cholesterol and other reducing effects of heart disease. The nitrates in spinach have also been proven to lower blood pressure which and promote cardiovascular health (source)
Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae which you will find in either salt or freshwater. Now I know what you must be thinking, clean eating gone crazy? Seaweed, really?
If you take a look at the nutrients it includes I think you will agree with me when I say you would be crazy not to try it.
Nutrients at a glance:
- B vitamins
- Vitamin K
The nutrients in spirulina contain a considerable amount of proteins, with a multitude of B vitamins and minerals like potassium.
It also has a special element in the pigment of the skin called phycocyanin which is has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to fight free radicals in the body (source)
There is no doubt that wheatgrass is up there with the good guys and is packed full of nutrients, it’s farmed before the plant matures to get all the goodness.
Nutrients at a glance:
- Amino acids
- Vitamins A, C, E
The main health benefits of wheatgrass come from the very high concentration of chlorophyll which is really good for the liver, fighting cancer and healing properties. It is also known to be very good for boosting your blood count.
A pilot study identified that wheatgrass juice reduced transfusion requirements on patients with blood disorders. Patients consuming the juice significantly reduced the need by 25% in half of the volunteers. (source)
Benefits of Green Superfood Supplements
According to US Department of Agriculture (USDA) the recommended daily intake of vegetables for adults are: (source)
- Women – 2 to 2 ½ cups per day
- Men – 2 ½ to 3 cups per day
Sounds achievable right?
You’d be surprised, for some getting the full dose of greens everyday isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Research according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states:
“Of the US adult population only approximately 22.1% of men and
32.2% of women are eating vegetables 3 or more times per day.”(source)
Do you remember always being told to eat your greens when you were a kid? Then why aren’t we doing it as adults?
A lot of it boils down to the busy lives that we lead in today’s modern world. It’s a distant memory from times gone by, when everyone sat down for that nutritious home cooked meal with the family.
A green superfood supplement basically takes a concentrated dose of these highly nutritious whole foods and extracts them into a powder.
So why not just throw all the raw natural veggies in blender?
I will agree to a certain extent, if you have the time and money to do this every day then why not, but how many do? And could you really stomach that for breakfast? For me personally, I will stick to my oatmeal.
As the green superfood powders contain all the same nutrients, vitamins minerals that the actual raw food contains, it allows you to get all the same goodness to help you maintain a healthy balanced diet in a convenient way.
Here are a few of the many benefits at a glance:
- Boosts your immune system
- Antioxidants fend off free radicals
- Restores pH balance in the body
- Helps lower cholesterol
- Regulates blood pressure
- Helps digestion
- Improves energy levels
The pH Balancing act
Do you remember the science lesson about acid and alkaline pH balance? Well your body also works on the same principles.
Many foods contain high levels of acid such as meats and fried or processed foods and too much acid in your system can lead to common problems such as heartburn.
Green superfoods (which also mean the powders) emphasise heavy on the alkaline pH which helps restore the balance in your body. (source)
Green supplements contain a dense portion of antioxidants which are vital to health and wellbeing. We have all heard about damaging free radicals and the links to serious diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease.
Research suggests that based on its antioxidant properties taking a green supplement could reduce the risk of chronic diseases which involve a burden of oxidative damage. (source)
Good for Your Heart
The green superfoods contained in the powder also provide extensive benefits for your heart and blood pressure and cholesterol.
The dietary fiber contained is good for improving glucose metabolism and blood pressure control. (source)
Who Could benefit?
That’s an easy answer, pretty much anyone could benefit from topping up their nutrients, but let’s take a closer look.
Veggie Dodgers and Vegetarians
Now I know these two are at total different ends of the scale, but believe
it or not, they could both benefit from taking a green superfood supplement.
Let’s face it, vegetables are not everyone’s cup of tea and for the veggie dodgers of this world a green superfood supplement disguised in a smoothie could be a good way to get those extra nutrients they wouldn’t normally eat if it was on their plate.
And also for vegetarians, certain vitamins and minerals can be difficult to maintain by diet alone so some may require supplementing and a green supplement is full of all kinds of nutrients which could fill that gap and it also contains lots of plant based proteins.
People who spend a lot of time travelling, or have a generally fast paced lifestyle could benefit. If time is limited it’s a very convenient way to make sure you get your nutrition.
High Protein Diets
A high protein diet are quite popular in the fitness word, bodybuilders trying to increase muscle or people trying to lose a little weight often cut out the carbs.
But people probably don’t realise that it’s quite acidic to the body, so by topping up the neutralising alkalines found in a green superfood, it could balance everything out.
At the end of the day if you ask anyone, getting what your body needs is always best by consuming real food through your daily diet.
It’s important to remember the main principle of taking a supplement is exactly that, to supplement your existing diet and to try and fill in the gaps in the nutrients you are lacking so that you can maintain a healthy and well balanced life.
What is the Best Green Superfood Powder?
As there are so many different green superfood supplements out there, trying to find the right one could be a back breaking affair just like digging your own yard.
So I have had a look at what’s super on the market and come up with five which I think could be suitable for everyone.
For me, it has to be pHresh Products Greens Powder as it just ticks all the boxes and stands out from the bunch.
It has such a diverse spectrum of rich nutrient filled green superfoods ranging from your conventional leafy greens to the exotic sea algae which are all clearly listed so you know exactly what you are putting in your body.
