Working out from home is very popular these days and a folding exercise bike is a top choice if space is an issue.

Whether you are a fitness fanatic wanting to max on your gains or a newbie looking at entry level options, you will find a great selection to choose from.

With so many currently available, I’ve pieced together the best folding exercise bikes out there to put you in the picture.

Why Choose an Exercise Bike for an at Home Workout?

When it comes to fat burning, cardio is key. However, many people who are just getting into (or back into) fitness find the idea of running like an extra on The Walking Dead trying to avoid being eaten by zombies, in front of a room full of strangers at the gym, an intimidating thought. In fact, many would rather chance it with the zombie than possibly see someone they know (let’s face it – it’s always an ex!) while sweating profusely on a piece of gym equipment.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that at-home workout equipment is both popular and readily available.

Of course, as a personal trainer I always get asked what is the best cardio equipment to use and like most things in life, they all have their pros and cons depending on your current fitness level and goals. What I love most about an exercise bike opposed to a treadmill for example, is they are pretty universal in terms of who they are suited to.

Where pounding a belt repeatedly may not be the best option for everyone, a bike can be used by most people regardless of age, gender or fitness level. Plus, they are one of the smallest items of equipment, making them perfect for a home setting.

You can also get an awesome workout on a bike. Plus with short HIIT routines like the one below, you not only seriously burn some calories, but do so in a mere 20 minutes, making them a great tool for even the busiest of people.

However, with all this in mind, that doesn’t mean you automatically know what to look for, especially if you’re not a Tour de France winner. So, let’s take a look at what is important when it comes to choosing the best folding exercise bike.

Key Features to Look out for

When it comes to choosing a folding exercise bike, there are basic features which need to form part of your selection process regardless of your budget. To save you some time, here are a handful of suggestions on what to look for in a folding exercise bike.

Levels of Resistance

A mix of both cardio and strength training are essential if you want to achieve results; varying levels of resistance will make this happen.

Low cadence at high resistance is great for developing muscle endurance and strength, whereas high cadence on low resistance focuses heavy on the cardio.

Resistance can also help you adjust the level for an easier session which makes it great for beginners who don’t want to go too hard too soon.

The fitter you become, the higher tension level you will be able to maintain; therefore, if you want to up your game, resistance levels on your bike are key.

A good folding exercise bike will give you the option to manually adjust the resistance level according to your workout.

Riding Position

For me, comfort is crucial. If you feel any discomfort you won’t be riding for long which will defeat the purpose. As with any type of bike, you need to make sure it will accommodate and provide the correct riding position.

The seat height should be positioned so that when you are at the bottom of the pedal stroke your knee still has a slight bend to it. Your leg doesn’t need to be completely straight.

Getting the setup right will prevent any aches and pains, so the bike seat must be adjustable to fit your height.

Seat Comfort

Close-up of an exercise bike's adjustable seat.

As any cyclist knows it’s important to make sure the seat has enough support and comfort to prevent soreness in sensitive areas.

However, I would also like to point out it’s perfectly natural to experience a certain level of discomfort for a short period of time whilst your butt gets used to the saddle.

Pedals

Pedals form an important driving force between you and your exercise bike, so you need to be sure they are designed to accommodate your feet.

Straps help to keep you in position and prevent slipping which will give you the confidence to put the hammer down and really exert yourself. They also allow you to push down and pull up creating an efficient cycling motion.

Another crucial point to remember: be sure to use your whole foot and not just your toes when pedalling.

Noise Levels

If you don’t want to upset the neighbours or other members of your household, how much noise your exercise bike generates is a definite consideration.

Many exercise bikes have different mechanisms to combat this issue. fly wheels and belt drives all help to reduce decibels.

Weight

How much you and the bike weigh is another area to look at.

Firstly, make sure it’s going to take your weight. Secondly, you need to be confident it’s going to be sturdy enough when you are putting it through its paces.

Workout Data

Data is a great motivational tool for workouts and it’s also essential to help you progress and improve your fitness levels.

Many exercise bikes include computers that display parameters such as calories burned which is important if weight loss is your aim.

Speed and distance are also beneficial if you want to set yourself endurance goals.

Pulse rate monitors will measure your heart rate to steer you towards your targeted performance zone.

Is the Bike Easy to Assemble?

Folding bikes are great if you are short on space, but how easy it is to pack away after your workout is another important consideration.

If it’s going to feel like a workout setting it up each time you use it, quite frankly you won’t bother. Features such as wheels for easy transportation and how compact it folds away are key points to think about.

Additional Features

Some exercise bikes will have extra features, although they aren’t necessarily essential, they are great for preventing boredom which will spur on motivation.

Tablet holders give you the option to link into workout programmes or watch movies. TV remote holders will help you switch over channels without interrupting your workout and bottle holders allow you to keep hydration close to hand.

Best Folding Exercise Bike

When choosing the best folding exercise bike for you, it won’t take long to realise there is a wide variety to choose from.

To speed things along, I’ve pinpointed the great and the not so great features on 5 top choices to get you in the know on the best folding exercise bikes around.

Innova’s folding upright exercise bike offers a great way to achieve both a healthy mind and body.

The LCD display is easy-to-read and to operate. Functions include time, distance, speed, calories spent and an odometer. The in-built heart pulse function helps to keep you within your target range to get the most out of any workout.

The seat comes with a backrest for additional support and has a 4-way adjustment allowing you to fine tune your riding position.

The dual flywheels and multi-level magnetic resistance system should provide you with varied workouts. The discreet operation will give the least possible disturbance for other household members.

One additional feature that attracted my attention is the patented universal tablet holder. It means you could catch the ball game on tv or dial into a training app on your tablet. Either way, for me it shouts out “no more boring workouts” and should keep you motivated even if you are easily distracted.

This bike is really compact making it ideal if you have very little space to spare. Others were pleased with the magnetic resistance system and said the smooth pedalling mechanism does a good job at operating silently.

The downside for some was the resistance level. They said it could have been higher and felt the max just wasn’t demanding enough. This may imply the Innova bike could be better suited towards beginners or light users.

Others also found the seat wasn’t that comfortable and a little too firm for lengthy periods in the saddle.

Pro Multi-level magnetic resistance system
Pro Large seat with backrest - adjustable vertically and horizontally
Pro LCD monitor: time
Pro distance
Pro speed
Pro calories
Pro odometer and pulse rate
Pro Built in hand pulse monitor

The Marcy foldable exercise bike is geared to keep you fit and save you space.

In terms of construction, this bike is made of heavy duty steel which should give a sturdy foundation for weights up to 300 pounds. The seat is padded with high-density foam which will help to minimize saddle soreness and it’s also adjustable for heights between 5’1 and 6’2.

This bike has eight cardio levels of magnetic resistance which are easily controlled to stimulate different challenging workouts. The two-inch screen indicates variables such as calories, speed, distance and time and makes monitoring your pace nice and easy.

This bike has gripped pedals and include straps that will prevent your feet from slipping. That’s great for maxing on workouts.

When you are done with your routine, it’s designed to fold away compactly. This allows it to be easily stored which means no excuses for hanging your clothes on it.

The majority are of the opinion this bike may not have lots of bells and whistles but for the price it’s awesome. It’s very nicely designed; the computer read out is simple to use and keeps track of ride details well.

However, the seat design has proven to be somewhat troublesome for the guys. For some guys, the shape of the saddle caused a few pressure issues in areas where it really shouldn’t.

It also appears even though they were within the height recommendations some shorter people seemed to experience problems reaching the pedals correctly.

Pros
Pro Eight levels of magnetic resistance
Pro Easy screen interface: speed
Pro distance
Pro calories and time
Pro Suitable for users 5’1 to 6’2 in height
Pro Adjustable pedals with foot straps

The upright magnetic foldable fitness machine from Ivation adapts to the space available in your home so that you can pedal off the pounds.

If you want to recreate the sense of cycling up hills or on flats without leaving your home the magnetic resistance takes care of that with its 8-level tension system.

It has an LCD console to measure your workout speed, time, and calories burned. The odometer will keep a tally on total distance and the scan function gives you the option to automatically display all the data available as you exercise.

Built into the handlebars is a pulse monitor which will give you a better insight into your workouts helping you focus on your target zone.

The adjustable seat is designed to accommodate anyone, no matter how tall or short. The actual seat is of a generous size for additional comfort.

This bike has a couple of additional features that could prove useful against boredom. Situated on the main frame is a small holder suitable for a tv remote control and directly on the console there is a bracket to place a tablet.

This bike also folds and packs away neatly making it easy to stow between uses.

Many agree this appears to be a no-fuss exercise bike that is of sturdy build with no wobbles and provides a whisper quiet ride. Users feel they get a good workout with the bike and highly rate the convenient use and store aspect.

Despite its good points, the LCD display did prove to be a let-down for some. It doesn’t contain a backlight which made the display a bit dark and difficult to read in poor light conditions.

Another gripe related to the heart rate sensors in the handlebars. Some found they needed a strong grip before it would read a pulse rate, whereas others found it simply stopped working altogether.

Pro Extra-large comfort seat
Pro Maximum weight capacity 300 lbs

Pro Monitor displays time
