Who Can Benefit From Fish Oil Supplements?

The easy answer is that anyone who doesn’t eat enough oily fish should be taking a fish oil supplement.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel. In order to reap the benefits they offer they should be eaten 2-3 times per week. (source)

Although that sounds simple, most people find it a huge ask. Fish is something that’s not particularly popular with lots of people. Even if you’re a fish lover, if you share your meals with your family, often a fish dish will not suit everyone at the table.

Fish is commonly passed over for meat or poultry alternatives; therefore, the only other way to benefit from those omega-3s is through supplementation.

What are the Benefits of Fish Oil Supplements For Women?

There are a number of advantages to taking fish oils for everyone regardless of gender. However, there are also a few that are especially helpful to the ladies.

Vast research over the past few years has shown that docosahexaenoic acid or DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA which are found in fish oil are critically important to the human body.

Here are just a few things that using fish oil supplements could do for you:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Lift mood
  • Assist weight loss
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Supports joints
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Treat eye disorders (dry eyes/cataracts)
  • Support immune system
  • Whole body anti-inflammatory
  • Ease menstrual pain
  • Prevent Alzheimer’s disease
  • Reduce symptoms of ADHD
  • Support hair and nail growth

Frankly, if those benefits aren’t enough of a reason to increase your fish oil intake, then I don’t know what is!

How to Choose The Best Fish Oil Supplement

Many fish oil supplements are pretty similar, so picking the right one for you can be quite tricky.

You’ll likely have to choose between a capsule or softgel form. Unfortunately, both are usually pretty big so you’ll have to get used to swallowing them.

In regards to the fish oil itself, all will contain EPA and DHA, but it is better to go for a brand with a higher dosage per pill.

You should be looking to get around 2 grams of combined EPA and DHA per day. Obviously the lower the dosage the more of those huge pills you need to swallow!

The Best Fish Oil For Women

I’ve scoured the internet looking at every online store I can find. I’ve compared products, their advertised benefits as well as the opinions of those who used them previously. I selected five which I think are a good place to start for anyone looking to try a fish oil supplement.

If you are an experienced fish oil user, please feel free to share your opinions in the comments below. It is always good to get feedback from our readers and even learn about other products I may not have come across this time round.

Out of all of the products I looked at, these have the highest dose of omega-3 fatty acids at a whopping 860 mg EPA and 650 mg DHA.

This is another lemon flavored softgel which is apparently “burpless”. This means that you don’t get any fishy reflux which happens with a lot of the cheaper brands.

Furthermore, people who used them noted improvements with dry eyes, joint inflammation as well as boosting energy. They are a reasonable price. The only downside is the size of each softgel.

Pros
Pro High dose EPA and DHA
Pro Lemon flavored
Pro Softgels
Pro Burpless
Pro Reasonable price
Cons
Con Large size

These offer a really good dose of omega-3 fatty acids with 800 mg EDA and 400 mg DHA. They are another softgel product.

I think the most impressive thing is that they are certified halaal. It is good to see more companies becoming culturally friendly by ensuring their products are halaal and kosher.

One negative is that considering you get quite a small amount of pills (2 months) they come in at a higher price.

Pros
Pro Good dose of EPA and DHA
Pro Certified halaal
Pro Softgel
Cons
Con Higher price
Con Bad flavor

This is another fish oil supplement that doesn’t have a huge dose of EPA and DHA at 430 mg and 325 mg.With that said, they do have the added bonus of not only being a softgel but also lemon flavored to hide that fishy aftertaste. They come in at a really reasonable price. However, with these you only get two months worth of pills where most products offer a bigger supply.

Pros
Pro Softgel form
Pro Lemon flavored
Pro Smaller than average
Pro Reasonable price
Cons
Con Small supply
Con Low dose of DHA and EPA

This product is a softgel which some people may find easier to swallow than capsules. They offer 400 mg EPA and 300 mg DHA – still pretty low in comparison to other brands.

These could be a good option for someone just starting out with fish oil if you don’t want to go ahead with a high dose straight off the bat. People who have used them said they helped to lower their cholesterol and really like them.

Pros
Pro Capsule form
Pro Just fish oil
Pro Could lower cholesterol
Pro Reasonable price
Cons
Con Low EPA and DHA
Con Bad flavor

This product is a luxury fish oil (Krill) and is specifically designed for women.
As well as DHA and EPA, you’ll find Krill’s natural antioxidants, along with evening primrose oil. Users report that this supplement is great for giving you energy also for helping menopausal symptoms.

As good as that is, they only contain 55 mg of DHA and 100mg of EPA per 3 capsules. This is probably the lowest I’ve seen in a fish oil supplement.

Moreover, the most disappointing thing about this brand is the price. They are hugely expensive, although they do offer a big supply per bottle. They come in a capsule form and as expected they are pretty large.

Pros
Pro Best Krill oil
Pro Packed with antioxidants
Pro Includes evening primrose oil
Pro Users found helpful for menopause symptoms
Pro Large supply
Cons
Con Very expensive
Con Low DHA and EPA

What’s The Best Fish Oil for Women?

Let me start by saying that all of the top five I chose are excellent products. Out of all the brands I looked at I must admit that for me personally, the Nature’s Branch brand is the one I will try.

The main reason is their high potency omega-3 fatty acid content. I think this product is most likely to produce noticeable benefits. Plus, lemon flavored softgels are better than stomaching fishy flavored pills.

With that said, if you have a personal favorite, please feel free to share your opinions in the comments below and let me know any alternatives to try based on your experience.
