What Is The Best Fish Oil For Kids?

Children running on a field with the title "What is The Best Fish Oil For Kids?"

You wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that omega-3 fish oils are the latest wonder supplement. With benefits for our hearts, brains and digestive systems, most people can benefit from taking them. It’s no surprise that research is now showing that they are great for our kids too.

Convincing our little angels to consume something with such an unappealing smell and taste as fish oils is certainly a challenge. And I’m sure you’re wondering what is the best fish oil for kids?

It’s been proven time and time again that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils are incredibly beneficial for our children’s development. Not only have they been proven to aid learning and behaviour in many children, but also greatly aid those with learning difficulties.

Knowing how hard it can be to get kids to take anything that’s good for them, I’ve looked at all of the available fish oil supplements for kids and chosen five that I feel are the best options. To make it easier for you, I’ve listed all of their pros and cons as well as chosen my overall favorite.

Who Needs Fish Oils?

We already know the vast amount of benefits available to adults when taking omega-3 fish oils. They’ve been shown to help with everything from dry eyes to depression! In this article, however, we’re going to take a look at the ways in which fish oils can contribute to the health of our children.

For starters, omega-3 fatty acids boost our youngsters’ brain power and help with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD. (source) In practical terms, giving your kids fish oils everyday could boost their performance in school.

All children need to consume a balanced diet including all essential vitamins and minerals in order to grow and develop correctly. Omega-3s are an essential nutrient. You’ll notice that the food pyramid recommends sources such as salmon and herring for growing youngsters.

Although eating oily fish is the best way to get omega-3s, most of us fail to include enough fish in our diets. This can be especially true when it comes to fussy kids. In these cases, a fish oil supplement can be extremely beneficial.

What are Fish Oil Supplements?

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the components in omega-3 fatty acids which are responsible for most of their health benefits. As our bodies are unable to produce them we must get them from our diet. (source)

Dietary sources with the highest EPA and DHA content include fish like mackerel, sardines and rainbow trout. You can find omega-3s in pollock, fish sticks, tofu, walnuts and flaxseeds.

While these are all excellent ways of ensuring your kids get the fish oils they need, supplements can be an alternative for those who don’t get the recommended 2 portions per week.

There are no specific guidelines about fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids for kids at this time when it comes to mg per day. Around 450mg of combined EPA and DHA per day is considered to be a good amount for both kids and adults. (source)

Omega-3 spelled by fish oil capsules.

How to Choose a Fish Oil Supplement for Kids

There is a bewildering range of fish oil supplements available for kids. Many come in either a chew or liquid form to suit children with different abilities and preferences.

You should remember that supplementation should never be a substitute for a healthy diet, especially for our kids. That is why it is better to aim for an option which offers enough to top up a diet and not 100% (or even higher) of the RDV. This is even more so the case if you are not exactly sure how much your children are getting from the food they are eating.

You want to be looking for a supplement which offers a good amount of omega-3s per serving. Around 300 mg is a great option as it is enough to support a healthy diet.

It is also important to note that if you want to use fish oil supplements to help your child with difficulties such as ADHD, often a higher dose will be needed to see positive results. This however should only be done with the supervision of an expert such as your pediatrician.

I really like this product. For starters, it’s incredible value for a two month supply.

It comes in gummy form with three flavors available. Most say their kids enjoy the taste but it’s good to have a choice. The dose is 281 mg of omega-3s per serving along with multivitamins.

The only downside to these supplements is the sugar content. This is to mask the fishy flavor and make them more appealing to kids. I don’t think it’s a problem in moderation but if your child is diabetic or has blood sugar issues, proceed with caution.

Pros
Pro Gummy form
Pro Great value for money
Pro 3 flavors
Pro Nice taste
Pro 2 month supply
Pro Reasonable dose of omega-3
Pro Can be used from 2 years of age
Cons
Con Higher sugar content

This fish oil supplement comes in a softgel form and is recommended for aiding brain, bone, immune and nervous system health for kids aged five years and over.

These softgels offer 283 mg of omega-3s per serving and you get a 3 month supply at a great price.

One negative that many people have found is that despite being labeled as ‘chewable’ they are very difficult for kids to chew.

Pros
Pro Great value for money
Pro 3 month supply
Pro Aids brain health and immune system
Pro Offers good amount of omega-3s
Cons
Con Difficult to chew

This is another fish oil for children which comes in a gummy form. Each serving contains 303 mg of omega-3 fish oils – not too much or too little. They also have a multivitamin aspect. The formula includes vitamin D. As far as taste goes, many people have commented on how much better this product tastes compared to others.

The only thing that prevented me from rating this product higher was the price. The recommended dose is four gummies per day which means the bottle only offers a 30 day supply. As supplements go, I think you can find better value, especially if you plan to use them long term.

Pros
Pro Gummy formulation is soft and easy to chew
Pro Good dose of omega-3
Pro Multivitamin
Cons
Con Expensive
Con Need to take 4 gummies per day

This is a liquid form of fish oil supplement which is great for younger kids or those who have trouble with chews and capsules.

The 8 ounce bottle contains a lemonade flavored supplement that should last around 6 weeks. It has been designed to aid cognitive function and brain health in children.

It has a total of 513 mg of combined omega-3 fish oils per serving. Although an exact RDV has not been established for children, I personally feel this is a little high as it is close to the amount you would find in an adult supplement.

I think it would be a good choice for an older kid or teenager, but I would probably avoid it for little ones. If you have a fussy teen who hates swallowing pills, this product will probably work for you.

Pros
Pro Liquid supplement
Pro Lasts up to six weeks
Pro Good value for money
Pro Supports healthy brain function
Cons
Con Very high dose of omega-3s
Con Many people said it tastes very bad

This fish oil supplement comes in the form of a chewable burstlet. It’s advertised as aiding brain development and supporting memory, learning and behaviour. Each pack contains a 30 day supply with a dose of 500mg combined omega-3s per serving. The price is reasonable when compared with other similar products.

Many people notice positive effects in their children from using this supplement, however one downside is that many children do not like the taste. Nevertheless, this is solely down to preference and can happen with any pill. Choosing a supplement for your child is always a case of trial and error.

Pros
Pro 30 day supply
Pro Easy to chew
Pro Many people noted positive effects
Pro Good value for money
Pro 500mg omega-3
Cons
Con Bad taste

Our Choice

For me the L’il critters brand was my number one choice. I like that they can be used from a young age and are easy for kids to take.

I know they have a higher sugar content and of course we all want to limit the amount of sugar our kids get. But considering how tiny the pill is, it’s most likely insignificant if the rest of their diet is healthy.

If you can convince your kids that this is their daily sweet treat, not only will it help stop them craving cookies and candy, but also get them excited about taking something that is good for them.

  1. Hello,

Re: lil critters – how did you get “dose is 281 mg of omega-3s per serving”? 2 gummies only offer 100mg of O-3 as per the label. So wouldn’t that be a lack of O-3 vs your guideline of ~300mg a day? I’m giving this to my son but am wondering if there is an even better choice in terms of getting the most O-3 that is recommended.

    Thank you
