Speaking from personal experience, I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older I’ve had to add a new step to my beauty routine – removing the annoying hairs. Tell me I’m not alone!

It’s the lip and chin area that bothers me the most, and to be honest, it drives me a little bit crazier than I’d like to admit. I’m sure those hairs on my chin weren’t there in my twenties, but they’re sure here for good now.

I’ve tried all kinds of methods of hair removal. I tweezed them for a while; I’d get the magnifier mirror out, pluck them all and feel great about not having a beard anymore (ok, slight exaggeration, but it really doesn’t feel good!).

The following day when I happened to stroke my face for some reason, the little blighters appeared to have come back! Another tweezing session would reveal at least another dozen hairs a few millimeters long – where in the heck did they come from in such a short time?!

By now I’ve tried almost every kind of de-fuzzing technique, so I think I’m qualified to reveal out of all the methods available, which is the best facial hair removal technique? Read on as I share my knowledge…

What You Need To Know About Hair Growth

Hair is made of a protein called keratin. Each hair grows from an individual follicle which provides it with the nourishment it needs to grow. It goes through four main stages in its growth cycle:

  • Anagen – the hair formation and growth phase
  • Catagen – the transition phase
  • Telogen – the resting phase
  • Exogen – the shedding phase

Each individual hair goes through the different stages of its life cycle; the process can take from a few months to a few years.

The hair growth cycle has a significant impact on hair removal. During the anagen phase, the hair is being fuelled with nutrients to help it grow which means it’s very strong during this period.

When it comes to facial hair removal, we generally don’t allow hairs to grow for very long before removal which means most of them will be in the anagen phase.

However, any given hair may be at a different point in the growth cycle to its next door neighbor, which is why you may start to see hairs growing in an area a day or two after a hair removal treatment.

It’s not the same hairs re-growing quickly. It’s the surrounding hairs which were at the stage where they were just ready to break through to skin level when you finished your painstaking hair removal job.

So hair removal – whether it’s permanent or not – is an ongoing process of keeping up with the cycle of hair growth. (source)

Different Types of Hair Removal

The face is a delicate area, which means we need to take extra special care when removing hair. There are a number of different methods of facial hair removal, so everyone should find something that suits them.

Waxing

Happy woman showing her waxing strip before using it.

Waxing is a very popular way to remove facial hair; for those who haven’t come across it before, it involves applying warm wax to the skin. The hairs stick to the wax, which is removed in one piece if it’s hard wax. If you’re using soft wax, a fabric strip is placed over the top of the wax and swiftly removed, taking the wax and hairs with it.

Waxing Pros

  • Relatively long lasting results; re-growth occurs over around 5-6 weeks
  • Efficient – treatment takes very little time
  • Good for treating larger areas
  • Low cost – especially if you choose home waxing

Waxing Cons

  • Can be fairly painful, especially on the face
  • May result in ingrown hairs
  • Risk of burning the skin

You can reduce the risk of ingrown hairs by exfoliating regularly, which is a great part of any facial skincare routine.

The risk of burns can be greatly reduced by doing a patch test before you start to check the temperature of the wax before each treatment.

Threading

This is an ancient technique for hair removal which dates back to ancient Persia and the 1st century AD. It is very common in the Middle East and Asia, and is becoming increasingly popular in other parts of the world.

Threading involves using a length of cotton thread which is doubled; the two strands are then twisted together and rolled across the hairs to be removed. The hairs get caught in the twisted thread and are jerked out of the follicle.

It sounds simple enough, but having watched an expert perform the treatment on me and having subsequently tried to do it myself, I can vouch for the fact that threading is not as easy as it looks!

Threading Pros

  • Reasonably long lasting results; hairs regrow over 3-4 weeks
  • Very hygienic, as a single use thread is the only thing that touches the skin
  • Treatment takes reasonably little time

Threading Cons

  • Needs to be carried out by a trained professional
  • Can be quite painful

Tweezing

Close-up of woman using tweezers at the mirror to adjust her eyebrows.

Not to be confused with the popular trend of “tweeting”, this is a basic hair removal method which needs only a good pair of tweezers, a mirror and a steady hand. Tweezing essentially involves gripping the shaft of a single hair with the tweezers and plucking it away from the skin.

Tweezing Pros

  • Relatively long lasting; around 3 weeks
  • Very inexpensive
  • Precise – e.g. for shaping eyebrows
  • Can be done at home

Tweezing Cons

  • Quite painful
  • Time consuming
  • Can result in skin damage – tweezers can nick the skin
  • Can result in ingrown hairs

Laser and IPL Hair Removal

Woman in red glasses under going facial laser hair removal at a clinic.

This is a method of hair removal which, with a course of regular treatment, can permanently stop hairs from growing. Laser is a concentrated form of light energy; there are two types of hair removal devices which use laser technology.

Laser hair removal is a process where a device produces a very intense single beam of light which penetrates deep into the hair follicle, where the energy is absorbed and produces intense heat. The heat causes damage to the follicle, making it more difficult for it to produce a new hair.

Intense pulsed light treatment, or IPL, is similar to laser – it uses an intense form of light energy, but differs from laser in that it uses a number of different light wavelengths rather than one single concentrated beam. This results in a broader beam of light which doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply as laser.

Both laser and IPL hair removal can reduce hair growth or stop it permanently, but they are only effective on hairs which are in the anagen phase of the growth cycle.

Laser was historically thought to be more effective than IPL since it targets a more specific area and penetrates deeper into the skin, but many people find that they get very good results and permanent hair removal with a course of IPL treatment. (source)

Laser and IPL Pros

  • Long lasting, usually permanent results
  • Cost effective (if you get permanent results)
  • Can be done at home or professionally
  • Suitable for sensitive areas
  • No need to wait for regrowth between treatments

Laser and IPL Cons

  • Salon treatments or machines for home use can be expensive
  • Reasonably painful
  • Not suitable for all skin tones and hair colors

Hair Removal Creams

Woman with towel on her head applying hair removal cream on your face.

These are fairly self-explanatory; a cream which is applied to the skin in the area you want to remove the hair. Then read a magazine or watch your favorite show for the specified time while it does its work – this can range from three to fifteen minutes.

The chemicals in the cream dissolve the hairs which are removed with the cream when it is wiped or washed off the skin. When using this method, it is important to check that the cream you choose is safe to use on the face.

Because the hairs are only removed from the surface of the skin, they start to grow back immediately. Hair regrowth can be visible within a few days of treatment, so this is a temporary treatment which needs to be repeated periodically.

Hair Removal Cream Pros

  • Not painful (there may be a tingling sensation)
  • Low cost
  • Can be done at home

Hair Removal Cream Cons

  • Temporary results, has to repeated regularly
  • Hair regrowth within a few days
  • Risk of chemicals burning skin if left on for too long
  • Creams can have a chemical smell

This product works in a similar way to threading. It consists of a tightly coiled spring-like structure which the user bends the spring and rolls it across the skin. The hairs become trapped in the coils of the spring, and are pulled away from the skin.

Users reported that this device works well, but this comes at a price; most said that it’s pretty painful, especially as it pulls out multiple hairs at once. Some users reported that their hair regrowth was much slower with this hair removal device compared to other methods, and were generally impressed with effectiveness and value for money.

Pro Made in the US
Pro Suitable for small and large areas
Pro Inexpensive
Pro Slow hair regrowth
Pro Efficient
Pro Able to remove very fine hairs
Cons
