What Is the Best Citrulline Supplement Brand in 2018?

Tablets with the title "What is the Best Citrulline Supplement Brand"

Citrulline, also known as L-citrulline, is a non-essential amino acid that gets changed by the kidney’s in nitric oxide. This phenomenal amino acid has such a wide array of health benefits!

Citrulline is sometimes used to treat problems such as high blood pressure, certain forms of dementia, fatigue, muscle weakness and sickle cell disease, however more research needs to be done to see if it actually has a significant impact. (source)

Perhaps the most remarkable uses of citrulline is the affect it has on blood pressure levels. Nitric oxide, the byproduct of citrulline, has been known to decrease blood pressure levels in those with hypertension, which is a problem many people struggle with. (source)

Citrulline also helps with erectile dysfunction, intestinal issues, prevention of muscle degeneration in the elderly and with blood vessel problems associated with diabetes such as slow wound healing. (source)

Some studies even suggest that citrulline can help athletes with performance and recovery, as well as helping those with Parkinson’s disease and other dementia issues. (source)

If any of these issues affect you or someone you know, a citrulline supplement could be beneficial.

Since there is an overwhelming amount of supplements out there on the market, I decided to write this article to give you an overview on the different citrulline supplements out there. This article will compare five different citrulline supplements by overall price and quality.

Who Needs a Citrulline Supplement?

As citrulline gets broken down by the body, the kidneys turn it into a product called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps promote heart and blood vessel health by relaxing the arteries and easing blood flow throughout your body.

Current evidence indicates that a citrulline supplement can help lower blood pressure due to the relaxing of the arteries in those with prehypertension, which is an early sign of high blood pressure. It’s important to have healthy blood pressure levels to help prevent heart disease. (source)

Although it should be known that you shouldn’t take citrulline supplements if you are already taking a blood pressure medication as it can cause blood pressure levels to rapidly drop too low. (source)

It can also help those struggling with intestinal issues such as short bowel syndrome and celiac disease. (source)

What Is Citrulline?

Amino acids are the building blocks to proteins, since there are 21 amino acids, each amino acid combination creates a different type of protein. (source) Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, meaning that it’s an amino acid that is produced within our bodies and not needed to be consumed in our diets, although they are required for normal health and growth. (source)

The compound of citrulline is found naturally in foods such as watermelon, cucumbers and certain squashes, however it can also be found in a supplement form. Most of these supplements are a powder form, but you can also find some tablet forms as well. Unlike some other supplements, you don’t need to take citrulline with a meal.

How To Pick The Best Supplement

There has been no set dosage for citrulline supplements, in some cases you can take up to 9 grams a day depending on what medical issue you are trying to treat. However, dosage can depend on factors such as the user’s age and health. It’s important to follow to recommended dosage intake on the package of the supplement and to consult a doctor. (source)

Although there has been no solid evidence yet, some studies have suggested that the powder form had better absorption than the capsules. (source)

It’s also important to take note of the quality of the citrulline supplement. You want to make sure it’s 100% pure citrulline, without any added fillers or artificial flavours or colours. Another pro tip before you purchase would be to check the expiry date, as the product typically only stays fresh for one year.

If you are planning on taking multiple scoops or pills a day, you should consider trying to purchase in bulk in order to save money.

This powder supplement contains no additives or fillers and is non-GMO and completely gluten free and vegan. This bag contains 260 grams, making it budget friendly. Take note that this bag is only 260 grams, making it on the smaller size compared to some of the other supplements, if you are planning on taking it multiple times a day it may be cheaper to opt for a bulk product.

The powder may be a slight inconvenience, but other than that the overall quality of this product is great. Even if you are just testing out citrulline for the first time, I would recommend this one as it’s still a reasonable amount, for a low cost.

Pro Non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, kosher
Pro No additives
Pro Powder form for maximum absorption
Pro Good price point
Pro 100% pure citrulline

This product contains 300 grams of unflavoured citrulline powder, sourced from the USA. I really like the idea of an unflavoured powder, as you have the freedom to mix it in with plain water, or add it to a smoothie without changing the taste.

The recommended serving for this particular brand is 1-3 scoops per day, so it lasts depending on how often you are using it. This product is more budget friendly than some other products.

This product has 180 capsules containing 750 mg of L-citrulline. It contains no additives or preservatives and is made in the USA. The only thing to keep in mind about the capsules, is that some studies have shown that they may not be as optimally absorbed as the powder counterparts.

The price is reasonable, though with frequent use costs could add up pretty quickly.

The Source Naturals L-Citrulline capsules contain 120 capsules, each containing 1000 milligrams. The price point is on the more expensive side.

The problem with the capsules is that they may not be absorbed properly, something I noticed as well was that some consumers did say that they didn’t have any results after taking this product possibly due to the capsule form.

Pro 120 capsules per bottle

The thing I love most about this product is that it’s 100% pure L-Citrulline. It does not contain any other ingredients. The powder is vegan/vegetarian friendly and it is made in the USA.

This product can be a little pricey, meaning costs could definitely add up as it’s a pretty small amount of product especially for those who are planning on taking multiple scoops per day.

Pros
Pro 100% pure L-Citrulline
Pro Vegan/vegetarian friendly
Pro Powder form, just mix it in with water
Pro Made in the USA
Pro Good absorption
Cons

Con May not be convenient for those on the go

Conclusion

I decided to choose the Micro Ingredients Plant-Based Pure L-Citrulline. The reason being it’s such a good price for the amount you get, making it affordable for most budgets and the overall quality of the product is very good. Also, the product is 100% pure citrulline and it contains no additives, artificial sweeteners and it non-GMO.

It’s plant based and gluten free, so the diversity of this product means it can be used by vegans, vegetarians and those suffering from celiac disease or other gluten sensitivities. Another bonus is that it’s unflavoured, so you can mix it with plain water or add it to a smoothie and it won’t change the taste.

The powder formula may be a slight hassle for those who are constantly on the go because you either have to pack up the serving size of the product in a separate container, or carry the entire container of product with you, however it also means there’s a chance it will be better absorbed, so I think we can all agree it’s definitely worth the hassle.
