What is The Best Organic Chia Seeds Brand to Buy in 2017?

Chia seeds are considered to be one of the world’s healthiest superfoods. With a plethora of health benefits, it’s no wonder that many people are starting to include chia seeds on their grocery list. But what is the best organic chia seeds brand to buy in 2017? Let’s take a look and find out!

What Are Chia Seeds?

Chia seeds are tiny black seeds from the plant Salvia Hispanica, which is a cousin of our favorite fresh herb, mint (source). Hundreds of years ago, chia seeds were an important staple of the Mayan diet. In fact, the word “chia” means “strength” in ancient Mayan. Now they are grown natively in South America.

Despite being around for centuries, chia seeds have never had more recognition as they do now, due to their wondrous nutritional content and health-boosting properties.

Chia seeds are rich with so many of the daily essential nutrients you need, including (source):

Chia seeds are super low in calories and carbohydrates, yet offer a powerful health punch.

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

Quality Source of Protein

For vegans and vegetarians, getting enough protein from plant based sources is incredibly important. After all, protein is one of our most essential macronutrients. All of our body’s cells contain protein.

Chia seeds have a very high protein content, around 14% by weight.

High levels of protein in the diet promotes satiety and has been shown in studies to reduce appetite as well as cut obsessive thoughts about food by up to 60% (source).

This is one way that chia seeds could help you to lose weight.

Rich in Antioxidants

Chia seeds are overflowing with free radical fighting antioxidants (source)

According to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, boosting levels of antioxidants in the body from whole-food sources has positive effects on the body, much more so than with the use of antioxidant supplements (source).

Moreover, other research tells us that antioxidants such as those found in chia seeds fight against free radicals which can cause cellular damage which in turn contributes to aging and diseases like cancer (source).

The antioxidant power of chia seeds earns them the title of superfood.

Packed With Fiber

Fiber is one nutrient which is incredibly important to your digestive health, yet most people aren’t aware just how vital it is.

The soluble fiber that can be found in chia seeds promotes gut flora by passing through the digestive system unchanged until it reaches the good bacteria. They then digest it and use it as energy. This is known as a prebiotic effect which promotes overall health and helps manage body weight (source).

Promoting good bacteria in the gut helps to boost the immune system and prevent inflammation which can lead to obesity and a number of other diseases.

The fiber found in chia seeds absorbs 10 times its weight in water, becoming high in viscosity and creating a gel like substance in the stomach (source).

This means your stomach empties at a slower rate. Therefore, you feel fuller for longer and your appetite is reduced, which can help you to lose weight (source).

The fiber found in chia seeds also helps reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

At the moment, over 10% of the world’s entire population suffers with IBS, 2 out of 3 of which are women and 1 out of 3 being men (source).

According to a recent report, one simple yet effective way to reduce the symptoms of IBS is to simply consume up to 34 grams of fiber daily (source).

Filled with Omega 3s

In fact, chia seeds contain more omega 3 fatty acids gram for gram than wild salmon which is often thought of as one of the best sources of essential fatty acids.

However, the omega 3 found in chia seeds is mainly in the form of ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid). The body has to convert ALA into EPA and DHA, the active forms of omega 3 that offer the many health benefits omega 3s are known for.

Unfortunately, humans are not particularly good at converting ALA into EPA and DHA which makes plant based sources inferior to animal sources such as fish (source).

What To Look For When Buying Chia Seeds

Buy Whole Seeds

Although both ground and whole chia seeds are readily available to buy, those all-important omega 3s and vitamins are better protected and offer a longer shelf life in the whole variety.

If you like to use ground chia seeds, you can always put them into an old black pepper mill and grind them directly into your food.

Go Organic

Just to be sure your chia seeds aren’t accompanied by harmful chemicals, ensure you buy chemical free, organic chia seeds.

Pro Tip!

Buy your chia seeds in bulk! Buying in larger quantities saves money.

However, when it came to it, the fact that this chia seed brand is certified as organic by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is a certified non GMO just gives that little extra confidence in the quality of the product you’re buying.
