What’s in a Car Seat Cushion?

Essentially, car seat cushions are devices made of a type of supportive material—usually compressed foam, gel or memory foam—encased in a fabric cover. They’re designed to provide some cushioning and support, and put the driver in a better, more comfortable position for driving.

Car seats cushions come in a range of different designs according to the theory behind what the cushion is intended to achieve. Many of them consist of a rectangular pad with rounded corners that fit quite squarely on most car seats.

A lot of car seat cushions feature a cut-out portion in the middle of the side that sits against the car seat back. This is designed so that the coccyx, or tailbone is able to decompress, offloading the pressure through the whole spine.

Some cushions are designed in a wedge shape, sloping from higher at the back to lower at the front. These types of cushions are intended to encourage the pelvis to tilt backwards a little.

This increases the angle between the trunk and thigh, reducing pressure on the lumbar spine. Wedge cushions are often designed with a rear cut out section to further offload the spine. The tapering wedge also helps to free the legs to move more easily.

Other car seat cushions consist of seat and back support. These sometimes feature a gel core, which can have a cooling effect. Most cushions are enclosed in some type of breathable fabric—many can be removed and washed which is a bonus—which needs to be comfortable for the driver to sit on.

Why Do I Need a Car Seat for Long Drives?

Generally, the body is pretty adaptable. We were built to move, and this usually means that getting into any position—standing, lying, or sitting in a car—is no problem at all.

What our bodies don’t cope with very well is remaining in one position for a long time. No matter how hard car manufacturers try, driving just isn’t an ideal position to be in for hours on end.

One study found that 74 percent of drivers suffer from low back pain, the same percentage reports stiff necks, and 81 percent regularly get foot cramps while driving. Other research reports that driving predisposes people to low back pain and spinal degeneration.

With our feet constantly operating the foot pedals, and arms reaching forward to control the steering wheel and the gear shift if you have one, the spine is under constant pressure to maintain our position under load.

What Is a Car Seat for Long Drives?

Of all the different car seats on the market currently, it’s quite hard to identify one which is specifically for long journeys. Most car seats are designed to make you generally more comfortable and put you in the best possible position while you’re driving. This is of benefit to every driver whether they’re on a long or short journey.

There are however some characteristics of car seats which make them particularly suitable and useful to a driver who’s setting out on a long journey.

Driver Support

First of all we need something that’s going to provide a reasonable level of support. If it’s the type of cushion that you sit on, we want something fairly firm that’s not going to slowly compress throughout the hours behind the wheel.

For that matter, even the upright support shouldn’t be too soft; we want it to be firm enough to help us control and maintain a good postural position. However, people have such different postures—all of which are absolutely normal—and different cars, too!

This means that a particular product might be perfect for one person in their car, but won’t be the best car seat cushion for someone else in a different vehicle. If you try one type of cushion and it doesn’t help, consider trying another style to see if this works better for you.

The Cushion Cover

When it comes to fabric, breathability is an important factor we need to consider. The last thing anyone wants on a long car journey is to be sitting or resting against a surface that doesn’t how much airflow and makes us hot and sticky.

It’s always advisable with these types of products to look for something made from quality material, with good strong stitching—we don’t want anything that’s not going to last longer than two minutes.

Although at first glance it might seem like a car seat just sits there, we do create shearing forces across the material and stress on the seams as we twist and shuffle, especially getting in and out of the car.

Precautions for Use

One consistent problem with all car seats is that, by their nature, they automatically raise the driver’s seat height. This isn’t a problem if you’re on the shorter side, or have a car which has plenty of headroom, but it’s important to double check that using your car seat won’t give you a sore head!

Using a car seat also changes the driver’s position in relation to the steering wheel, controls and gear shift, so drivers who use a car seat may need to do a bit of repositioning.

This was a very popular product from a company established by an occupational therapist and her husband. There’s no doubt that the design of this cushion is largely a product of vast professional experience and knowledge.

Made from ergonomically shaped high density foam, this cushion features a cut-out section to relieve pressure from the coccyx (or tailbone) and lower back—one of the key areas which suffers when driving.

Users reported finding this cushion extremely useful when driving, especially over long distances, and many noticed a significant decrease on back pain, numbness and stiffness with this product.

A couple of drawbacks noted by users were that the foam is quite thin, and this cushion sometimes doesn’t work well with a contoured chair. Overall, though, most people thought this product did a great job for a reasonable price.

Our Choice

Car seat cushions are all about the precise design and dimensions, how well they fit a particular car seat, the fabric of the cover and the supportive material inside.

There were lots of things to like about all of the different cushions we tried and tested, with users making positive comments about all of them. This isn’t surprising; any cushion is likely to make a firm chair more comfortable, especially when sitting in a car seat.

Some cushions, however, just seem to have the edge on others.

There are small differences, even between car seat cushions that essentially look the same—and these can add up to a big difference when driving long distances.

In our opinion, the best car seat cushion for long drives was the Everlasting Comfort 100 percent Pure Memory Foam Luxury Seat Cushion. This cushion rarely failed to impress in terms of comfort and reduction in drivers’ back pain, and helped to absorb shock on bumpy roads.

The memory foam works very well to provide a firm but cushioned platform of support while at the same time this cushion is light enough to transfer between vehicles—or even take into work to use with your office chair!

Although a couple of users commented on poor stitching, they also said it didn’t affect the actual performance of the cushion. As a backup, this product comes with an impressive lifetime replacement guarantee. All in all, a great quality product for a fantastic price.
