In the past home gyms have been thought of as exclusively for the mega wealthy living in mansions or other large homes. Fortunately nowadays, there are many affordable all-in-one home gym devices, often under $500, that allow any of us to enjoy the benefits of a home gym.

In this article, I’ve looked at the features offered by many of the top selling home gyms in an attempt to find the best affordable home gym available in 2017.

Why Choose A Home Gym?

Having your own personal gym at home can lead to more workouts for you and your family. You can also save time by not having to face the commute to the local gym. You won’t have to wait for other people to finish using the equipment you need next, and you know exactly who’s been using the equipment and whether it’s clean and ready to go.

A recent study showed that just 150 minutes of moderate exercise can increase your lifespan by 3.4 years. Owning a home gym can make it easier for you and your family to do that extra half hour a day of exercise. By increasing your exercise to 300 minutes a week you can even add 4.2 years of life expectancy. (source)

Setting up a home gym can be quite daunting with many home versions of machines you see in the local gymnasium available to buy, including treadmills, exercise bikes or elliptical trainers. Because you are here we assume that you have chosen to go down the one machine home gym route. The right all-in-one home gym can offer enough resistance and variation of exercise to ensure that you can get a complete full body workout whenever you want without leaving the house.

What to Look For in a Home Gym

Ease of use is one of the main factors to consider when looking to purchase a home gym. If changing from one exercise type to another is too complex or time consuming you may either end up not using some of the features or even worse boycotting your entire workout plan. Ensuring the home gym you buy is easy to use, and maybe even fun, can help you stick to your personal training goals.

The variety of workouts offered by a home gym should be another large consideration. Make sure that the system you choose allows you to effectively work out all the major muscle groups and has a wide variety of support exercises. Choosing a home gym with many of the features found in your local gym can allow you to carry on a workout devised by a personal trainer there.

A good home gym should offer enough resistance and variety of options for movements including squats, leg presses and bench presses while allowing for room to grow as you develop more lean muscle and get stronger from workouts. Extra features like double weight stacks and ropes and a multitude of handle attachments often add to the cost of your home gym but don’t necessarily add too much in terms of versatility of exercises.

Practical Considerations

Comfort should be considered when choosing the best affordable home gym. Workouts are not always very comfortable but you should try to ensure your equipment is. Any home gym you purchase should have a natural range of motion and be able to accommodate your body size.

Many home gyms are fairly tall to hold high pulley movements and can feature wide bases for extra support and stability. Make sure the home gym will fit where you want it to and have enough clearance room to be used safely. You can often check the assembled size in the product description and make sure that your planned workout room will hold your new piece of equipment.

Top 5 Best Affordable Home Gyms in 2019

We have looked at many different brands of home gyms and chosen five of the best sellers which, in our opinion, represent the best affordable home gym for the money.

The Bowflex PR1000 provides over 30 different exercises with upper, midrange and lower pulleys targeting all major muscle groups. This machine allows you to do bench presses, shoulder presses and raises, scapular retractions, seated lat rows, lower back extensions, bicep curls and many variations of these exercises. You can also lift weights with this machine using the power rod provided resistance.

The Bowflex PR1000 has a maximum resistance of 210 pounds which unfortunately cannot be upgraded like many other Bowflex machines. This may not be enough resistance for some serious body builders but 200 pounds or more should be enough for most people to gain muscle. The trick is to complete each exercise more slowly to feel the burn.

Pros
Pro Extremely versatile and can target any part of the body.
Pro Over 30 strength exercises are possible.
Pro Bowflex have produced a very solid machine tested four times for durability and to ensure it lasts a long time.
Pro Resistance offers a safer way of using weights than free weights.
Pro Workout placard displays all exercise descriptions making it easy to set up for the different exercise options.
Pro Folding ability makes it easy to store this machine away.
Cons
Con Guys looking to seriously gain more weight or bodybuilders may find the 210 pound resistance is not adequate for them.
Con Although covered by a five year warranty
Con the Power Rods are not covered for wear and tear. They do eventually wear out and will need replacing.

This home gym from Bayou Fitness uses body-weight for resistance eliminating the need for heavy weights. Bodyweight resistance home gyms can offer excellent workouts for heart rate, calorie burn and fat loss but are not ideal for building strength or muscles. Some of the exercises do use free weights for added difficulty and weight lifting but these are not included.

Like many other body-weight home gyms the Bayou Fitness Trainer 4000-XL comes with many accessories and extra to help target specific muscle groups and build the perfect workout. Accessories provided include a bicep curl bar, a pull up/push up bar, a biceps powerflex attachment, a heavy duty extra large squat board and dual leg cuffs. A power weight bar is also included for adding free weights, along with other options like pro crunch ab strap and a Pilates toe bar.

A set of program cards, an instructional manual and DVD can help you to tailor the perfect workout. Although all the weights are 10 pounds, each plate can weigh more or less dependent on the exercise. One 10 pound weight will be 19 pounds in the pec fly, 22 pounds in the high pulley and 57 pounds in the lower pulley. Confused? Exactly, but many machines work like this so eventually you will get used to it.

Pros
Pro Very durable steel frame.
Pro Arrives ready assembled and folds away for easy storage.
Pro Large variety of added accessories can provide many options for your workout.
Pro Training video and program cards make this very easy to use.
Pro An ideal home gym for people who want to improve their shape and general fitness. Great for cardio and fat burning workouts.
Pro Extremely safe to use as it relies only on body weight with no added heavy weights to fall or slip.
Cons
Con Bodyweight gyms are not ideal for building mass as they do not feature heavy weights.
Con Glider can be uneven when first used. Depending on your weight this usually smooths out after you have used the machine several times.

This budget model from Gold’s Gym uses a 125-pound vinyl covered plate stack to provide a maximum resistance of 300 pounds. Six adjustable workout stations allow for a complete body workout. High and low pulleys work both the upper and lower body with different cuffs and handles; they can be used to perform additional exercises like kickbacks or single leg curls.

This home gym system is extremely quiet in operation. Vinyl covered cement weight stacks don’t make the clinking sound of many steel weights when the separate plates hit each other. The cables are also vinyl covered which allows them to move smoothly through the pulleys and prevents vibration or squeaking.

Pros
Pro One of the quietest home gyms on the market.
Pro High and low pulleys offer complete body muscles workout.
Pro Four bar leg roller
Pro lat bar
Pro and chest press allow for isolation exercises to target specific muscle groups.
Pro Very good value for a versatile and reasonably durable machine.
Cons
Con Vinyl covered concrete weight stack is less durable than iron or steel in the long term.
Con Confusing weight stack system.
Con The XR 55 is very limited to what height the user can be. If under five foot or over six foot tall this machine may not be so comfortable in some exercises. A common problem on many cheaper machines
Con but it seemed so much more evident on the XR 55.
Con Weight stack cannot be upgraded and you cannot add any other attachments for a larger choice of exercises.

The Weider Ultimate Body Works is a unique home gym system developed by the late Joe Weider, often credited as the “father of bodybuilding” and trainer to Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is probably one of, if not, the cheapest option for an all-in-one home fitness system.

An adjustable bench allows you to change the incline for a more or less intense workout. You can use the sliding board to pull your body weight up and down using the resistance cables and pulleys that allow specific muscle groups to be targeted. A detailed instruction manual shows 100 different exercises that can be performed with this simple bench.

There are no weights with this machine, just additional resistance bands for adding more resistance than body-weight alone. Four included bands can add up to 50 pounds of extra resistance.

The workouts available on the Weider may get you toned and lean, but it will not make you look like Arnie. For muscle building you would need even more variety and heavier weights, which this machine does not provide. At 80 pounds weight many users may struggle to lift it, and despite folding, the feet and handles prevent stowing away under a bed or like place. The rollers are sticky to help provide traction but do not roll too much.

Pros
Pro Very very cheap. What else did you expect the number one pro to be?
Pro Simple design and is compact. No additional parts to screw on.
Pro Over 100 different exercises. A workout poster details the different exercises that are available with this product.

Cons
Con Not ideal for bodybuilding due to lack of heavier weights
Con Users under 5 foot 3 inches tall may be limited with some of the exercises.
Con Even though the unit is very compact
Con it is not easily movable or storable

Our Choice for the Best Affordable Home Gym

I often recommend to many clients in the gym that they can complement their training program by continuing at home. For days when the car won’t start or you simply don’t have time to go to your local club, a home gym can be an ideal solution.

After looking at many home gym systems and narrowing it down to our favorite five, I would have to say in my opinion the best affordable home gym for the money is the Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym.
