Imagine the scene: here we are, the proud owners of our very own set of weights, fantastic! So let’s get cracking on all of the exercises that are possible in standing up and lying down positions.

After a few training sessions, most people generally start to realize that you have fairly limited options. Some people bring in a dining chair or similar, but after cracking their knuckles a few times on the back of the chair doing triceps work, it seems this isn’t a great option.

This is the time when people normally start to ask for advice, and my answer is always the same – you need a weight bench.

While no gym worth the name is without a weight bench, people are often a bit confused as to how to use them properly and get the most out of them.

There are various different types of weights benches, and all have their purpose and place in the gym. However, if I had to choose one bench to use at home, it would definitely be an adjustable weight bench. In this article we’ll take a look at some of my top picks for the best adjustable weight bench and how to use one.

What is an Adjustable Weight Bench?

An adjustable weight bench is a great piece of gym equipment that many people initially think they can do without. It’s not until you get one that you realize their true benefit.

Offering a massive amount of convenience and versatility when it comes to free weights, an adjustable weight bench is a stable surface that you can use in a variety of different positions to assist your weight training and get the absolute most out of your training.

Who Needs an Adjustable Weights Bench?

In all honesty, anyone using free weights really does need one of these. They make training so much easier, and lend themselves to doing a huge variety of different exercises that aren’t possible without a decent weight bench.

Benefits of an Adjustable Weight Bench

There are several benefits of using an adjustable weight bench to help you reach your training goals. Let’s look at each one in detail:

Full Body Workouts

Using an adjustable weights bench allows you the range and flexibility to train all of the major muscle groups in the body. It assists in achieving a whole host of different positions that just aren’t possible without a bench.

Expands the Variety of Exercises

Using an adjustable weight bench really adds to the amount of different exercises you can do. Here are just a few examples of some of the exercises possible with a weight bench:

  • Dumbbell bench press
  • Dumbbell row
  • Tricep dips (using the bench as arm support)
  • Chest fly
  • Ab workout (plus working on an incline if you have one)
  • Lat pull over
  • Push ups in a number of different forms

Being designed for the job, adjustable weight benches allow you to complete your chosen exercises through a larger range of movement compared to trying to improvise with other things.

An adjustable weight bench also allows you to change the angle you’re working at during weight training. This increases the effect of whatever exercise you happen to be doing, making the muscles work harder as well as in various different ranges. Working at different angles also gives you the opportunity to target more muscles using the same exercise.

Safety

Whether you’re working out alone or with a buddy, safety should always be a top priority. If any exercise is unsafe, the risk of causing injury to yourself is just not worth it.

An adjustable weights bench is designed for the job in hand. They are designed to be stable and aren’t going to tip over while you’re doing tricep dips or any other exercise.

Saves Time

There’s nothing more frustrating when you’re working out than if you want to do a particular exercise and you don’t have the right equipment to do it. It breaks up your workout, lets your heart rate drop and wastes time while you look for possible options of how to improvise.

Keeps Your Workout Flowing

An adjustable weight bench can not only help you to complete your workout in a shorter time, it also helps your training to flow smoothly, allowing you to move swiftly from one exercise to the next without having to mess around.

Okay, you will need to change the position of the bench from time to time, but once you are familiar with your bench, adjustments are done within seconds – and it’s on to the next sets!

Things to Consider When Buying an Adjustable Weight Bench

Health and fitness means different things to different people, and as a result, training goals can also vary from person to person.

This means that we might all want different things from an adjustable weight bench, so here are the things you need to consider:

Bench Height

One person might want a basic adjustable weights bench with no bells and whistles, another individual might want to use their weight bench in conjunction with a power cage or squat rack.

In the second scenario, you will need to consider the overall height of the bench you choose to make sure you have enough clearance for using a power cage.

Weight Capacity

One essential consideration is how much weight you need the bench to handle. While you might start off with relatively low weight, a good quality adjustable weight bench is likely to last for a good few years.

It’s a good idea to make sure that the weight bench is rated for more weight than you are currently working with – plus your body weight – to make sure you get good use out of the bench.

Space

If space is at a premium for you, it is important to consider how much floor space the weight bench is going to take up – some are a more compact size than others.

In addition, some manufacturers make adjustable weight benches that fold away for storage, which may be more suitable for you than one which has to have a permanent, dedicated space.

One things to watch for is that foldable benches generally aren’t as stable as static ones.

Incline

Having an adjustable bench with an incline means that you can, for example do abs work with greater resistance to make it more challenging, and many other exercises besides, so it’s a great option to maximize the versatility of your bench.

Not all adjustable weight benches have incline settings, so this is something to look for in models you’re interested in buying.

Attachments

It’s worth noting that some benches can be used with various attachments, such as a leg developer or a lat pulldown. Sometimes these attachments are included in the initial purchase and others need to be purchased separately.

Not all adjustable weight benches are compatible with attachments, so this is another important thing to check up on, as they can make your workout much more versatile, dynamic and fun!

Bench Comfort

Hopefully, you’re going to be spending a lot of time using your weight bench, so comfort is a key factor. In general, most people want something that is nicely padded – enough to be comfortable, but not so much that you want to spend the night on it!

Again when it comes to padding, you need to consider how much weight you’re planning on working with. The heavier the load, the more people tend to sink into the padding, so if heavy weights are your ultimate goal, go for something with more padding rather than less.

Get Some Wheels!

This applies especially if you’re planning on moving your weight bench around a fair bit. Some of them can be so heavy that moving them is a workout all on its own, so it’s wise to consider whether or not you’d be better off with a bench that has wheels – many models include this feature.

Warranty

Different models of benches come with varying warranties, ranging from a short warranty of a few months, normally on the lower priced benches, right up to a lifetime warranty that covers absolutely everything.

It’s worth considering the warranty that comes with any given model, and choose one with a warranty you are happy with. If you want an adjustable weight bench with an all-inclusive long term warranty, be prepared to pay a bit more for your bench.

Other Types of Workout Benches

There are other types of weight benches available. Here is a quick guide:

Flat Bench

A flat bench is a useful addition to any gym for many different exercises. It’s also a good basic option if you need to keep costs down. Flat benches tend to be light and easy to move, and can be a good option when you have limited space as they tend to be the smallest type of weight bench.

However, a flat bench isn’t usually the most sturdy option when it comes to handling an intense workout, and they can have quite a limited weight capacity.

In addition, a flat bench doesn’t give you the full range of options that an adjustable bench does.

Olympic Bench

An Olympic weight bench is wider and longer than a standard bench. Intended to be used in advanced weight training, they are designed to handle a lot of weight, ranging into the hundreds of pounds, and made from very high grade materials.

Olympic benches are often attached to uprights to allow the user to rack a barbell, but this makes Olympic benches much less versatile when it comes to other types of weight training. For example, they often don’t have an adjustable seat and have very thick padding due to the amount of weight they are designed to handle.

Of course, Olympic weight benches are extremely sturdy and durable. They are also generally much larger than the other types of weight benches, so take up a considerable amount of room, and are more expensive due to the size and high-grade components.

So it’s easy to see how these other two types of benches are limited in terms of use, which is why an adjustable weight bench is a good choice for most users.

How to Use an Adjustable Weight Bench

As with all gym equipment, the top priority is making sure you are safe when using it while also making sure you are working out effectively.

Here are my top tips on using an adjustable weights bench:

Keep your feet flat on the floor, or flat on the bench, according to whatever exercise you are doing. Correct foot placement gives you the stability that you need to be able to work the intended muscle group. It also helps you not to fall off your bench! The bench is there to support you, so make sure it’s doing its job before you start every exercise.

If you are going for overhead lifts, first adjust the seat so it’s in an upright position and sit comfortably against the backrest. There should be a small space between you and the backrest at your lumbar spine, but the rest of your back should be in contact with the backrest.

This not only protects your back from getting injured, it also means that you do the exercise correctly and have less chance of cheating, because this position stops you from being able to gain movement momentum by rocking your body.

You can still potentially start to arch your lower back when you get tired and the weight gets heavy, but only you can stop this – not the weight bench! Play around with the inclines and declines of the bench, and repeat the same exercise at different angles. It can make all the difference to engaging different muscle fibers and being able to reach, for example the anterior, middle and posterior fibers of the deltoids to give them a good workout.

Don’t attempt chest exercises at too high an incline – this can potentially create problems at the shoulder joint. A small incline, however, can help to target the upper fibers of the chest muscles, while a slight decline helps to target the lower fibers. Don’t use your weights bench for any other activity. It is designed to provide support while weight training. It was never intended to be used for step aerobics, and this may lead to injury.

This is a good quality durable weights bench which impressed users with its 12 different positions from minus 20 degrees to 80 degrees, which pretty much accommodates all needs. People also liked the three different leg positions, which give more stability when working on an incline.

This bench has a unique triangular structure that provides great support, and many users commented that it was neat and tidy, and the legs don’t get in the way during training or moving around the bench.

Another popular feature of this bench is that it folds flat, so can be easily stored when you don’t need it. With a maximum weight capacity of 800 lbs, there’s no doubt this bench is heavy duty, plus it includes leg stabilizers for additional support if you need it.

Users thought the upholstery and padding was very comfortable and generous at just under two inches thick, although some people found it could get a little slippery at times. Overall the vast majority thought this was a great bench for a fantastic price.

This commercially rated bench from Body Solid comes fully assembled and the company are so sure of its durability that they offer a full lifetime warranty for personal use in the home.

Users liked the flat folding design for compact storage. Another nice design feature is that the back support tapers from 9.5 inches at the seat end to eight inches at the top to allow for a much greater freedom of movement.

Most people found that the seven different positions from incline through flat to decline were great, although some were disappointed that this bench isn’t compatible with accessories such as a leg developer or lat pulldown, as with some of the other Body Solid models.

People found this to be a sturdy and solid for working out with comfortable well-padded upholstery, with the only downside being that this bench was more expensive than most of the other benches reviewed.

This weight bench from Bowflex is generally very popular with users because it’s good quality, reliable and sturdy. Most people liked the range of different angles, with six different positions from minus 17 degree decline to a 90 degree incline.

Users thought this was a heavy duty bench which was easy to and ergonomic to work out on although some people found it took up quite a lot of space. The upholstery is good quality and unlikely to tear, although some people found it wrinkles after a few training sessions.

The main downside users mentioned was the unusually large gap between the seat and the backrest when used in the flat position, which some people found uncomfortable. Another potential problem is that this bench is quite long, so it may not suit shorter people.

The leg brace attachment was liked by some people, but not by others, but it’s easy to remove if you don’t want it attached to the bench. In fact most people found the whole bench easy to assemble, comfortable to use and worth the money.

Our Choice for the Best Adjustable Weight Bench

Although it was a close one to call with the York bench coming a very close second, the best adjustable weight bench in my opinion is the Fitness Reality 1000 Super Max Weight Bench,

People were very impressed with the general quality of this weights bench, which offers good flexibility in terms of seat positions, plus the three different leg positions for added stability. In addition, this bench can handle more than enough weight for the vast majority of people.

The option of folding this bench for storage was also another plus point for many people, and no-one can argue with the excellent price, particularly when it’s backed up with the 1-year warranty. For all-round performance and value for money, this weight bench is hard to beat.
